Question:

My 1987 outboard mercury thunderbolt overhearted

dued to chewed up impeller fixed that but motor wont start it will turn over but wont start could it be the stator/soleniod im not to sure if its any of that need help any suggestions thanks o and i do have spark

  1. If it's turning over then the solenoid is good.  If it's turning over fast enough to generate spark, then the starter and stator are both good.

    First thing I'd do is a compression test -- to see if the motor was damaged by running too hot.

    While your checking compression, inspect the spark plugs -- if any of the ground electrodes are smashed then you broke a connecting rod.  If you see any silver or gray flecks on the plugs, you melted a piston.

    Good compression and spark, that just leaves fuel.  Make sure the carb bowls are filling, if they are then rebuild the carbs.

    BTW, it only takes about 45 seconds of dry running to rip an impeller to shreds -- always supply water to the lower unit whenever the engine is turning.
