The car dies unless I immediately shift gears into reverse or forward and hit the gas. Hitting the gas keeps it from shutting off completely and the car drives fine afterwards. I've taken it to several mechanics and they can't find anything wrong with it. These episodes happen once every couple of months and that's why it's so puzzling. Last winter I was unable to restarted after it shut off, but by the time the car was towed, the mechanic was able to start it with no problems at the shop and didn't know what could be wrong with it. Any ideas?

  1. You may have an intermitant fuel pump issue. Or you are just accidently flooding the engine.

  2. suggest taking it to the dealership for diagnosis. the dealership equiptment works much better for daig. purposes than the aftermarket (snap on, matco, mac, etc) independent shop diag. equiptment.

may need to act up though to diagnose.  May have a campaign /recall  or servive bulliten issue for that problem.
