While driving my 1999 Jeep Cherokee, the radio began to cut out. The battery meeter read very high. The check gages light came on. When I got home I turned it off. It would not restart. Power locks worked, but would not even crank. After 15 min I tried again. It started. What the h**l?

  1. This is definately an open circuited battery, this is why your alternator went nuts.

If the terminals are clean and tight there is a faulty connection INSIDE your battery and it will have to be replaced. See an auto electrician.

Do not drive this car until it is fixed or you will cause massive damage to the on board electronics and even deploy the air bags.

  2. i'm not entirely sure but i would think your alternator is surging and some sort of circuit breaker is switching then resetting. but i am just kinda guessing here. buy a CHILTONS owners manual.

  3. it could be a faulty voltage regulator and on those vehicles the voltage regulator is in the computer.  the voltage regulator keeps the charging of your alternator between 13.3 and 14.4 volts. if to voltage regulator has gone out it will either not allow the alternator to charge enough or make the charge to the battery way to high and possible kill the battery.  change the battery and see how the car does. if problem still there then you need to go to a shop for a computer if problem resolved then the battery shorted internally.

  4. Check your battery cables for corrosion. Especially the ground cable.
