My 1yr old won't stay in crib?

My son just turned 1 last month and he is climbing everywhere! I can't put him to sleep in the crib cuz he will climb out or flip out of it. My husband sleeps very hard so I can't keep him in the bed with us cuz he will roll over on him and then I don't sleep from trying to protect the baby. I put him in the high chair (strapped in) while we were at dinner and my back was to him, next thing I know he is running around the kitchen. I just don't know what to do. He is driving me crazy. I can't put him in a playpen either or he'll flip right over the edge. The crib mattress is on it's lowest setting. Do some cribs have higher bars or is there a standard size? I really need some suggestions.

  1. My son also started doing the same thing at 9 months.  He was, in my opinion, too young for a toddler bed.  My solution was to put a crib tent on his crib.  He loved it and it kept him safe in his crib until I let him out.  He moved to a toddler bed once he was able to climb in and out easily by himself and understand, go to bed.  Which was at about 14 months.

    Good luck!

  2. You didn't mention the size of the crib- but I'm assuming it's pretty standard sized. I've seen cribs with walls up to 4 feet tall. Usually however when toddlers start climbing out of their cribs it is recommended that you switch to a toddler bed for their safety.   To prepare for the possibility he will climb out of bed at night, keep his door closed or gated and the room child-proofed.

  3. lol what a cheeky monkey.

All I can suggest is dont put him in a cot, Put him in a little toddler bed. If he wont stay in either, I think its much safer if he sleeps on a low bed, as he wont hurt himself getting out. When he gets out, ignore him completely and out him back into his bed.

He may do this as an attention thing, so no attention will make him realize.

My brother used to do the same when he was a baby. Mum just let him go, we used to find him asleep on the floor in the lounge room, cold and tired when he woke. He soon got the point that hif he stayed in bed, he'd stay warm

  4. What about scrapping the crib all together and putting a mattress on the floor?  This way, there's no danger if he falls out of bed.

  5. when my baby was passing that stage, I was so tired that I made a radical choice, I bought a couple of thin maitresses and moved into the living room flor for a few ... well, months ... haha about three, so then I wasnt worried that she would hurt helself, she escaped a few times in the morning, but was never squeezed under dad´s back or fell from the bed. it also turned out o be a great solution fro playing time.... she had lots of soft cushioned space to play....

    good luck!

  6. tie him down

  7. Our crib turns into a toddler bed so shortly after my son's 1st birthday we changed from a crib to a bed.  My son would never sleep in his crib but as soon as i changed it to a bed he sleeps in it! I think the bars made him freak out. anyway he's a monkey boy too so I just put a baby gate across his door at night to make sure he stays in his room if he gets up.

    Good Luck & God Bless!

  8. Your baby is full of energy.

Check his diet! remove sugary substances and feed him mostly vegetables.

He needs to spend this energy. So take him to larger areas that are adequately covered and let him go free. and continue to play until he falls asleep whilst playing.

adult interaction like tickling and chasing him around will also tire him out quicker. continue to do this until he starts to calm down a bit.

Sleeping time: remove all sharp objects from the room and let him sleep on the floor. With the door closed.

  9. There are tops you can buy for cribs now adays, which cover the top of the crib-so they cant climb out. Try Babies R Us for this item

OR go ahead w/a toddler bed. I took all 3 my children out of their crib and put them into toddler beds, as soon as they learned to crawl out.

    GOOD LUCK

  10. Been there done that.  Dr told me to put a crib mattress on the floor or get a good toddler bed because my oldest son could climb out of just about everything at 12 months old.  Of course i then had to baby proof the room completly and get a good baby monitor and put alarms on the bedroom door because he figured out how to open the door lol.  I ended up having him get in bed with me. At 1 year old he should be safe in bed with you as they will wake you up if you get near them and they don't like it or you could put your bed agains the wall and have him sleep close to the wall and then you sleep beside him and your husband beside you that should keep your husband from rolling on the baby and you can sleep and protect him at the same time.

  11. You know i had the same problem recently, the doctor told me to change into a regular bed and teach him how to get down without falling .. the bed has a rail, and ive taught him to roll over and climb down on his own .. that didn't only stop the flipping out of the crib, but it made my mornings easier because he doesn't cry for me to get him out anymore he simply climbs down and walks over to me.

He is still a little monkey and climbs onto everything else .. but i hope at least i helped with the crib !! =]

  12. It sounds like he is quite athletic to me. I would check out the baby supply stores for cribs with extra high bars. However, if at his age he can get out of his high chair while being strapped in then he can probably get out of any crib. Today there are also very small,  low beds made for toddlers. You can get such a bed with gaurd rails  to keep him safe as he sleeps, but he can climb out easily which he will do anyway.  He is curious and wants to explore. He is probably bored in the playpen. So you will just have to super child proof your home, and continue to keep close eyes on him. I know it's hard, but try and enjoy this time because kids grow up fast !
