said to thicken his breast milk via bottle with rice cereal. He said 1 tablespoon per 2 oz of milk. Which seems like a lot of cereal to me eveery bottle and he eats every 2-3 hours during the day he goes 7-8 hours at night asleep. I didn't start the cereal right away I waited a week then he started choking on plain breastmilk during the feeding via bottle. Since starting the cereal in the bottles my son went for 2 days without a bowel movement and would grunt and try to go so I gave him a couple of bottles during the day without cereal and he finally had a stool. He gets really congested when the milk does not have cereal in it. My questions are how frequent should he be having stools now with the cereal and is that alot of cereal for a 2 month old? With the acid reflux is it common to see choking during feeding and congestion? I am worried he will end up with pneumonia.

  1. not everthing works for everybody maybe you should put smaller amounts of cereal in the bottle and gradually increase with each bottle until his body adjusts to the change

my son went through the same thing i had to switch from breast milk to formula then soy milk

i tried all kinds of cereal with each milk and finally soy and rice

it worked turns out the kid was just lactose intolerant

i flat out refused the drugs because my child was developing and i aint want not drugs interfering

now hes five and can drink all the milk he wants som how the allergy went away along with his strawberry and peach allergies without any interference he used to just eat with his brother who had no idea what an allergy was and it solved the problem

  2. Rice cereal is VERY constipating. Remember that it is iron-fortified. That sounds like a lot of cereal to me, too, per bottle. Can you get a second opinion, either from a different ped in the practice or a different doctor? How is his weight gain? For a breastfed baby at only 8 weeks to go 7-8 hours of sleep at night is a bit troubling to me. I think he is being overstuffed with the cereal.

  3. i hate to question your dr's advice, however, i personally would find another dr.  my daughter takes baby zantac for reflux and it has worked like a charm.  i have never heard of putting rice cereal in a bottle as a cure for this - a 2mos old shoul really not be having solids yet AND adding so much cereal to his bottle is giving him way too many extra/unnecessary calories.  also, milk can cause phlem in a babies throat (and an adult for that fact).  choking is not common unless the cereal is causing him to choke---your baby is just too tiny for cereal!  oh and the solid foods will effect his stools----there is more sustance for his body to digest so he will go less often.  Breastfed babies will p**p very often but adding cereal will slow their systetms down.  i would be concerned about the choling however----perhaps you are using too fast of a nipple - but i guess you have to as you are adding the rice cereal in the bottle.  why not try just a bottle and make the rice cereal in a separate bowl and feed his that way....keep in mind, babies need to learn how to movew solids from the front of their mouths to the back----and at 2 months, that is early to learn...good luck.

  4. My daughter who is now 3 also had acid reflux as an infant, the amount of cereal does seem like alot to me, i only used enough to thicken it slightly, sorry i don't remember exactly how much.

we also had the bowel movement problem.. and i used an old remedy my grandmother used, pour in dark corn syrup..just enough to change the color of the milk. worked every time!!

the only problem we had with the cereal being added to her diet so early was the fact that she gained alot of weight very quickly, she was in her 100 percentile every check-up, and is still a little on the chunky side.she's 3 1/2 and wears a size 4 or 5

My daughter had the choking problems when we switched from breast to bottle feeding, she just wasn't use to it.

I hope i helped, if you have any more questions feel free to email me. have a great day:@)

  5. Yeah that does sound like a lot of cereal. Try putting a little less in his bottles. I mean it doesnt hurt to try putting a less amount in. We out just 1 tablespoon in a 6oz bottle and it is plenty and my son does not have a problem going #2.  Your baby is still young. Weird he would tell you to put that much in. Try less for sure.  My son usually goes to the bathroom every other day. Just has been like that from day 1. Heard it is not uncommon for babies to go a little long without going to the bathroom. Maybe call another doctor to get their opinion also? Or just call your pediatrician back and talk with him.

and yes...my ped. told me when my son was constipated..this was b4 giving him the cereal...to put kyro syrup in his bottle...2 teaspoons per 2oz 2 times a day. but be careful..seems like your little one is having a lot of problems..ask your doctor before you do anything.

  6. I tried giving my son rice in his formula when my son was around the same age and the same thing happened. I decided not to give him anymore rice cereal until he was able to eat it. Personally I would not put my son on any of the medications that the doctor prescribed(this is just my preference). What worked the best for me was to feed the baby about on once of formula and then burp the baby and do this until the bottle was gone. Then I would burp the baby after the formula was gone and then let the baby sit in a bouncy seat or swing for about 20 minutes(I let my baby sleep this way because he would sleep longer but some people object to this). I was thinking about why son had this and then it came to me. I do not lay down as soon as I am done eating because my food has not digested yet, so why would I expect my baby's food to.

Another that you may try is putting your son on Enfimal AR(it has rice cereal in it). You may want to talk to your doctor about it. Good luck to you!!!
