My 2 year old can open the front door. Any products out there to prevent this

Am very worried about her walking out one day when I am not in the room (the front door is in the living room).

The problem is this:

1) if i lock the door and leave the keys there, she could remove the keys and lose them

2) If I lock the door and remove the keys, I guess there is a chance that I could lose the keys, and then be unable to escape in the event of an emergency - although we do have balconys in the living room, kitchen and bedroom, but we live on the 2nd floor.

What to do...

  1. You can get a double-keyed deadbolt and then keep the keys on a hook attached to the doorframe that's high enough from the floor that even you have to reach up to remove the keys.

There's also a little gadget that came with my house - I don't know whether they're still made.  This is a little hinged panel that's mounted to the doorframe; when the door is closed, you flip the flange out and it drops into another part of its hinge so that the door can't be opened until the flange has been lifted and rotated back to its "open" position against the doorframe.

  2. Keep the keys safe left up somewhere. or put another lock at the very top of the door.

  3. s***w a small hook into the door frame  and hang the keys from it. put the hook up high.

  4. my 2 year old nephews doing this too...scares me to death!

My brother in law put a lock high on the door :)

    problem solved!

  5. lock the door , remove the key , and be responsible enough to look after it !!

  6. Purchase a bolt and fit it high too high for the child to open it.

  7. double keyed deadbolt and put the keys in your pocketbook, after 21 days= it's a habit, and you will always know where your keys are

  8. you buy a little bolt or a hook and eye and put it where she cannot reach... if you really want to lock it..

  9. These are a life saver!

  10. Get a door chain.

  11. A small bolt out of reach will work.

  12. We have a sliding bolt that you can flip over to make sure the door doesn't open fully and you can flip it back easily from the inside. It is also super easy to install. Otherwise you could get a security gate that is open and the child can see outside. Our daughter climbs underneath ours and ran around with the keys the other day, fun.

  13. Depends on what type of door k**b you have.  If it's the standard round k**b, you can go to Walmart and get a k**b sleeve.  I used this for our basement door when my daughter was 3.  It just attaches to the k**b and you have to have "big" hands to open it as it requires you to squeeze the sleeve simultaneously in two spots to be able to turn the k**b.  Sounds complicated but took me only about one minute to install and another minute to figure out how to open the door.

If you have a different door k**b, like a french door k**b or an elongated k**b, you could just attach a door chain to the top of the door and keep it chained while at home.  If you install the chain at the top of the door, she can't reach it.

  14. a lock

  15. I would lock the door and remove the keys, leave them as near as possible to the door.

You lock the door at night dont you, theres no difference during the day really.

  16. buy one of those Bolt/Latch thing they're not v expensive n u can fix it at the top of ur door so only a tall person can do/undo it.

  17. Just get one of the little latches that will lock the door or a slide type latch - put it high enough that the little sneak can't reach it.

  18. A bolt at the top, cheap to buy, easy to s***w in, easy to undo for you.

  19. Door chain, fitted near the top of the door.

    Cheap

    Effective

Safe - an adult can easily slip ir if you need to get out in an emergency

only slight problem, if he opens the door, puts hand in gap and slams it shut.

Cheap oldfashioned style padbolt at the top of the door would also keep it shut, possibly better than the chain.

Ultimately, you should discipline the child not to do it. (A loud NO should suffice, I am not suggesting smacking etc)

  20. cut off fingers problem solved  lol !!
