My 2 year old has a pimply rash around his mouth. What is this?

We have been to the doctor and they prescribed some medication (for dermatitus) but it doesn't seem to be working. I plan on taking my son back in another week (I want to give the medication a little more time to work to be certain). The rash is not yeast and it ranges in severity day to day. Has anyone experienced this?

  1. It sounds like he may have a type of eczema. It sounds similar to what I have, which is called atopic dermatitis. Mine appear at random in patches and look like little bumps or pimples that itch and may turn red or slightly bleed if scratched too much. They can also look like blisters of some sort if you continue to scratch it. Some medications do not work for me even though doctors claim that it is specifically for my skin condition. Also, it may take several days or a weeks for the medication to really kick in.

Here's some more information about atopic dermatitis:

Atopic dermatitis is the most common form of eczema, especially in young children. I found out recently through research that products with fragrance make the skin condition  worse, especially scented soaps. Try finding soap/shampoo that does not include fragrance. Aveeno has many products that are for people with sensitive skin and even have a bodywash that is specifically for people with eczema.

If you want to learn more about it go to http://www.nationaleczema.org/home.html They have plenty of information for people who may have the condition or who are unfamiliar with it.

Also, here is a page that addresses what ingredients to avoid in certain products (for not only people with eczema, but for sensitive skin in general):

I hope this helps you a little and good luck!
