any faster. Engine in neutral will rev up to 6000RMP, engaged in only goes to 3000RMP then no more acceleation. Is this like a transmission problems ? Is it in the outdrive?

Greatly appreciate any ideas?

  1. Jtexas gave excellent advice.  The only question I have is if the boat ever revved higher since you owned it.   If it DID NOT or if you changed props recently, this could be caused by having a prop with way too much pitch. Try testing several different props with 2 to 4 inches lower pitch and see if that helps.  Usually if you go to a local marina and explain your problem, they will loan you a couple of props to try until you find the one that performs the way you want it to.

  2. clutch is slipping.

  3. what engine have ya got in there?

    carbureted or fuel injected?

It's not at all unusual for an engine to rev up in neutral and then c**p out when you put a load on it.

But first take a look at your boat, outdrive & prop, look for any irregularities in the hull, dents or dings on the prop, etc.  Does the bilge pump work - is it possible the boat is taking on water?  Is the power trim functioning normally?

Do you mean "about 3000", or "exactly 3000"?  Reason for asking, is that your engine might have a temp sensor that limits your revs if it senses an overtemp condition.  Also some V6 marine engines have a "shift interrupt switch" that shuts off one bank while shifting, to save wear & tear on the gearbox.

If it's not one of those two things, then it's one of these:  compression, spark or fuel.

Do a compression test first, see if you're losing compression in one or more cylinders.

Spark test (not a *spark plug* test), use an inline spark tester to determine if the ignition is capable of generating sufficient spark under load on all cylinders.  The gap will depend on what type of ignition you have.

Check your fuel tank for water and/or debris, check your fuel filter(s), test the fuel line for pressure, observe the carb (if equipped) to be sure the butterfly is opening when the throttle is advanced.

After ruling out all these other possible causes, then rebuild your carburetor (if equipped).
