Question:

My 21st Birthday is coming up, I'd like to have a bottle of a great red wine, any suggestions?

It will be a bonfire in the mountains with my closest friends, I will be bringing food, but I really want a great tasting bottle of wine to share with them at sunset. Most wines taste really bitter and because of this I can't enjoy them. So far I know I like red better than white, I don't like champagne (yet), so I'm looking for something light and fruity.

Maybe you could suggest what to pair it with (cheese/etc) Thanks!

  1. depends on the cost you want...

    cheap:

Trader Joe's amazing cheap and good

Boone's Farms: cheep and sweet, many flavors

    more costly:

any desert wine will be sweet and not very bitter.

  2. Black Forest Girl Pinot Nior!   Take my word, light and fruity-delicious!  Pairs well with most anything because its red, but yet so light!  And don't worry, I don't mean light as in a blush, that's yucky!

  3. It is difficult to give you a brand name because we don't know what you have access to.  I like Gamay Beaujolais.  Pinot Noir is also light and fruity.  I used to love drinking Lambrusco, it is a little fizzy and very sweet.  Good with pizza, but that doesn't sound like what you have in mind.  For sipping and chatting with wine, I like soft mild cheese (Chaubier, Gouda, Monterey jack, Muenster), a couple baguettes or other crusty bread, and fruit (all kinds of apples, pears, peaches, passion fruit, etc.)  (ahem, and Charlie Parker.)

For the wine you need red wine glasses.  It sounds petty, but it is essential.  Have fun!  Happy birthday!!

  4. Try a California cabernet or merlot (you probably won't like zinfandel).  Mondavi is a good vintner, with very reasonable prices.  Maybe a cheese platter (have a variety:  sharp cheddar, Brie, aged Swiss) with some bunches of grapes and ripe pears... and chocolate covered strawberries, or mini DARK chocolate bars.

  5. If you don't want it to be too fancy, try Boone's Farm. I know, cheap and cheesy, but I hate the taste of wine and I actually thought this stuff was great. Maybe try a dessert wine or something, these tend to be a lot sweeter tasting. Happy birthday, have a good time!

  6. I have to laugh at all the answerers telling you to get Boone's Farm. We're all in the drunk tank here. Might as well get mad dog (MD 20/20) if you're going to get Boone's Farm lol.

But seriously, try Shiraz from Australia and chill it good. It's the bottle with the kangaroo on it. It still has a little bitterness but it's in the middle and it has some quality.

Boone's Farm heeeheeeeheee... I just think it's funny. I'm not knocking the other answerers, really.
