My daughter is almost 2 and has been in potty-training process for a couple of mths. She only goes when we get her to sit on it though, not on her own initiative. She does not seem to care about being in a wet pull-up during the day, but is suddenly screaming "I have poopy diaper!" every single time she pees during the night. She stands up and keeps crying unless I change it. She has a diaper rash for an entire week that I cannot get rid of, even with a ton of diaper cream and yeast cream too, so I know her skin is extra sensitive. But should I give in and change it all night long? Very tiring, and I don't want to set a precedent! Previously she has always slept 11.5 hrs like a dream. Should I take the side off the crib and try to get her to sit on the toliet in the middle of the night? I doubt that will work as she will have already gone in her diaper. I tried limiting fluids before bed, and also try to get her to go before bed but she refuses. Help!

  1. hi yeh it can be exhausting when your not getting your sleep out,i would get a wet blanket for her bed and take off the diaper get a sticker chart and limit drinks yeh and go for it your up anyway so go for it good luck x also maybe check incase she has a urine infection incase its stinging her x

  2. My daughter is going to be 2 on the 6th of next month, what we are doing is we put her in the "big kid bed" and we take her potty right before bed, then when either me, or my husband  wake up to go to the bathroom during the night, we go wake her up and take her, then again take her right when she wakes up. Its kinda a pain, but she's learning. She won't seem to pee in the potty during the day, but she does at night, and she will only poo in the potty.

As for the rash, maybe thats why she is crying at night... ask the DR for some special cream? or try the desitin overnight cream.

  3. Some ideas would be no fluids two hours before bed. (or food)  Try waking her up before she wakes up wet to try the potty, when she does use it always make sure she is being rewarded in a way that excites her. But yes you should change her if she is waking up and complaining she is wet cause the diaper rash will get worse.

  4. Your daughter is waking at night because she is finally realising the sensation of having gone to the toilet, an important step in toilet training. However, she still does not have the ability to control this, especially at night.

Potty training during the day is completely different to at night. I would wait until you child goes of her own initiative during the day before you try and teach her at night. Definitely don't leave her unhappy in a wet diaper!  I doubt you will find any parenting experts that tell you this is an effective means of "teaching" a child to be toilet trained.

Can't you stop using pull-ups at night (which feel wet when a child has gone) and go back to a diaper that pulls the wetness away?

Also, the same thing happened with my son at that age, and it only went for a month or so. Yes, I changed them all night. I think it coincided with him also learning to use a cup, so he was drinking LOTS more during the day - including lots in the bath, which made it worse.

  5. it sounds like it's the diaper rash. when she's running around her diaper is hanging down and when she's lying in bed it's pressing around those now even more sensitive parts. she might be feeling the pressure to sit on the potty at night more than during the day too. she might not notice she's wet during the day but at night she's freaking out "omg I didn't go on the potty!" I suggest to get her out of the pull ups during the day so that she can tell when she's wet. have her potty next to her bed at night and when you change her just sit her there a second and make sure you congratulate her. getting her into panties will also help the diaper rash. if you've switched to toilet paper use a damp paper towel, not a wipe because the soap can be irritating.

  6. If you haven't yet, try some Balmex for the diaper rash, thats the only thing that works here. Hopefully once you get the diaper rash cleared up she'll sleep better!
