  1. Hi

I would like to say she is definitely a smart child and you should  continue to teach her new things. They are at there best at this age. Most children that are taught things at an early age seem to do good when the material is presented later in life. And only some children have emotional and social problems and are really advanced. If you allow your child to interact with other kids of her age, maybe a play date or go to a playground or put her in daycare for a few hours will help with her social development. As for her emotional stand point you seem to love her very much. Keep doing that and encourage her for the smallest things as well as the big stuff. Let her know it is OK to get up-set and do not try to suppress them. Just let her know it is not OK to take her anger out on others(hitting, falling out, etc) but it is OK to tell others what she is feeling. You would be amazed at how well they will pick that up. If any one tell you to slow down on teaching her THEY ARE CRAZY AND ANY REAL TEACHER WILL AGREE. What ever you are doing keep it up and show other parents your techniques that are close to and let them do the same. Parents that have a good technique should encourage other parents. Not all parents know how to teach their young children different things and that can cause problems down the line. Teaching don't start when they go to school it starts at home. That way they are prepared when they are in school and are able to keep up. The less a teacher have to dedicate her time to one student because they are a little slow at getting things the more your child will get from her education. Most kids are slowed down because the teacher have to help a child with things everyone already knows. This website shows you the 'norms' for different age children in accordance to English curriculum.

Her speech sounds advanced if she's already in sentence form and she obviously has a desire to learn and an interest whichis great! The next step from this would be to ensure she understand what she learns eg:-she may count 1,2,3,4,5 etc but if you said can you give me 2 pencils would she give you 2 or a handful? When she says her alphabet is the ABC rhyme or can she recognise that A is the a sound? As phonics will support reading a lot more than capital letters! Whilst she's got the interest its great to encourage her further!

  3. You might want to look into homeschooling and read Genius Denied.

  4. my son knew all basic colors when he was about 18 months, started talking in sentences and answering questions when he was about 24 months old. People have said that he's one of the most intelligent kids they've ever seen. so your daughter sounds the same way and she's smart. But you should never compare your child to other children. because lots of children learn at their own pace.

  5. I would say shes smart. My son pretty much knew that stuff too.  Hes one of the smartest kids in his class (k).  Keep it up keep teaching her since it seems like she loves to learn.

  6. Hi,

I work in preschool (or kindergarten depending on the state you live in).

Yes, it's great your 26 month old knows these things - but from an early childhood perspective, the thing a teacher will be looking out for before your child goes to school is whether they are socially and emotionally ready to go to school i.e. whether your child interacts with peers, can cope with change, responsible for their own well being such as knowing when hot or cold, when to go to the toilet, etc. etc and their items such as drinks, clothing and so on; can deal with group settings, knows how to stand up for themselves or be able to ask for help dependent on the circumstance, and it goes on.

Children learn those things incidentally anyhow - i.e. 'look at the BROWN dog', and this is natural learning stimulated by converstaion of the adult.  As they move through preschool, they do get taught this as well, but it's not mandatory that they know this before they start kinder, and at recent prep meetings with teachers who are starting transitions for the children beginning school in 2009, they aren't focused on this as well - more the social/emotional.  The teachers aren't going to say that one child is brighter than another because one knows blue and the other doesn't.  They will usually test the child to know what level to start them at in their teaching, but it's not a pass or fail if they know or not.

Yes, it's important to know these things such as colours, numbers and alphabet, but at this age the child wont recognise any meaning to it - mostly they learn it by rote (meaning they have it memerized) but usually only see them as icons without meaning.  It's only when they have an interest in writing, reading and maths that these take on meaning to them.

You're child is beginning to cognitively remember these things and that's very good.  Children's vocabulary expands at an amazing rate at this age, but don't forget their brains are sponges and soak up information but a lot of the time they can't interpret this information untill their brain has developed further.

But this is a good start : )

  7. I asked almost the same question regarding me daughter a few months ago. I was surprised at how negatively some people respond, especially those in the education field. God forbid you think your child is a genius. They most likely are. I think educators are intimidated by the pressure to preform and teach students of varying ability. If you had asked about a learning disability, I wonder if people would have that "who do you think you are attitude"?

My little girl is now almost 3 and I my be biased but I still contend she is a genius. She speaks better than most 10 year olds. She counts items. She can estimate amounts. She can rhyme, although she will sometimes make up words to rhyme. She knows all colors, all shapes even sphere, cube, even a few I forget like hexagon. She can count forward to about 30, backward and in spanish and French to 10.She knows her alphabet and all the sound for the letters. She memorizes books after 1 read through so we are not entirely sure but we think she is reading now. She can write her own name in giant letters on her chalk board. But those are the little things. She makes keen observations and sophisticated jumps in logic. She loves to play games on the computer on PBS. She has mastered most of them.

Now can somebody tell me how to get her to stop trying to play with the 8yr olds at the park and how to get her to not pee on my floor, that would be great.

  8. For a 26-month old child, she's rly very smart. I've seen other children who're about her age but they don't seem as smart. So, yea, I'd say she's pretty smart. ^-^
