Im 17, i live in Glendale California, and im tired of seeing all these kids with s550's and m-6's on the street. So i was thinking of getting a classic, i found a 1970 SS chevelle with the 427 engine, well over 430hp. I know about the gas prices, this car gets about 10-15 mpg but i'm not worried about gas. Is the insurance cheap for a car like this? Is it a good 2nd car? I owned a honda, it just wasn't cutting it. Thank you in advance to your answers!

  1. If it is restored you are looking at 275-400 a month as you are 17, it is a classic, and you may not even find someone to insure you. If it is not restored then insurance will be maybe 200 a month due to your age and engine.

  2. This is a REAL car. Easy to work on and enjoyable. Insurance on any muscle car is sky high. Your looking at about $500+ a month at least...depending on your state etc. 17 years old I think is a tad young because this car has the temperament of a fire breathing dragon. Cheaper on upkeep than any Honda is. Buy it...

  3. single, 17 years old, and a monster Chevelle? You may set a new record for high insurance rates....

A good second car? well, only if you just need a second car to cruise a little about one day a week. If you drive a car like that daily, it would get real tiresome and expensive replacing driveline components, if you're like I was at 17, you won't be able to keep your foot out of it. My '69 427 Chevelle busted the pressure plate, clutch disc, the bell housing, and the top ears off the transmission all at the same time-all for one good wheelie!

  4. You wont have a problem smoken the j*p cars in that. I have a 72 nova with a 454 in it. When I was 17 insurance was about 160 a month. this was 7 years ago and now I pay that for 3 new cars and my nova. be careful the *** end of these cars with a big block gets squirly especially in the rain. not to safe but easy to work on and cheap to repair. 427 is a dam good engine extremely responsive and snappy. you cannot beat the pride and the adrenaline rush of driving a rumbling classic like that.A little m-6 can make all the hissing and winning and blowing and sucking sounds it wants but you just cant beat the sound of a big block. Buy it, you wont regret it

  5. YOU WILL GET ALL THE GIRLS,AND THE g**s IN THE HONDA'S WILL BE DROOLING

  6. If a real 1970 Chevelle SS has a 427, it was swapped in. Chevelle SSs only came with 396s and 454s in 1970.

Cheap insurance? At 17? With an accident and a speeding ticket? Living in Southern California? I'm 29, with a clean driving record, and that car would probably cost me $2,000 every six months to insure. The $500 a month you were quoted is probably a conservative estimate.

It would not be a good second car, because 430+ horsepower engines tend not to live too long when driven by a 17-year-old male.

I know this ain't what you want to hear, but I agree with Dave N 150%. Keep your Honda.

  7. Well you have 3 things working against you

    #1 you are 17

    #2 you live in California

#3 it is a classic car and has high insurance.
