Question:

My 3 year old female cockatiel has plucked feathers!

She has plucked out all her fully-grown wing feathers as well as a couple of tail feathers! She looks like she just got her wings clippped but she hasn't! And theres dried blood under her wings..she keeps picking at it please help!!

  1. I think I heard about this behavior somewhere. She is lonely for a mate or a friend. They groom each other. Call the pet store. You may need to get another bird!

Plucking can become a real problem if not prevented/stopped in the early stages.  She could be lonely, bored, have some nutritional deficiencies or have something irritating her skin, but you need to get to the bottom of it before it becomes a real problem for her.  I would suggest a complete physical exam from your Avian Vet to rule out nutritional deficiencies/disease first and then tackle the behavior/environmental triggers (no companion, not enough toys, not enough bathing, etc).

    I had a hen who was plucked by her mate on the back of the head and ended up separating them but applied wheat germ oil to her skin to help with irritation and that helped soothe the area while the feathers grew back in.  You could try that and see if it helps but definitely get her checked out and adopt a buddy for her!
