Question:

My '88 Accord has a loud rattle from engine area?

I bought a '88 Accord LX w/ manual trans. the other day and it has a rattling/clanking noise coming from the engine area. The noise is not as bad when idling but when accelerating it gets worse. Almost sounds like an aluminum can rattling around. The previous owner says it is a loose bracket in the exhaust? Would that be the cause of my problem? Anyone have any ideas?

  1. that might be true and would be caused by engine vibration. not to insult your intelegence but some people also might try to take advantage of someone not knowing what to look for when buying a car and it could be a lot worse than that. i would get it looked at atleast by someone who knows what to look for

  2. heat shield or bracket of some type

need more info, get a long screwdriver put the tip on various places on the engine with your ear to the handle. Then try it on the exhaust. The louder the noise you hear the nearer you are to the source but watch for those moving bits. If it is a loose bracket you should be able to see it anyway.
