  1. All children have different rates of developing proper articulation.  If this is your first child, you probably do not have a point of reference.  I would say that at the age of 3, children are not expected to produce every sound correctly.  Sounds like 'th,' 'r,' and some others are not typically spoken correctly by most children until they are 5.  Does your child have any other developmental problems?  If so, then a speech/articulation issue could accompany it.  Best of seek the advice of a professional.

  2. My son was almost six before this behavior changed.  We were blessed to have a visit with a speech pathologist who was able to help us to learn the right diagnosis.

In a nutshell, the problem was that he was trying to make his mouth go as fast as his brain was thinking.  It just didn't work for him.  We were taught to have him slow down each time we had trouble understanding him.  Once he understood that he had to slow down his speech the problem was solved!!

I am not trying to say that this is your son's problem; although, it was ours.  Get in to see a specialist, the younger your son is when the issue us identified and a solution is offered, the easier it will be to treat.  Good luck and God bless you all.

  3. childrens speech developes at different paces but most will be at the same level by the age of 5 years at 3 yrs old i wouldnt worry but do seek professional advice if u feel needed.

  4. I think it would be worth looking into for early diagnosis gets the best results if there is a problem.  It might be as simple as needing speech therapy or a more serious problem, ie autism.  Begin with the Pediatrician.

  5. Get his hearing checked.  If his hearing is fine.  Then have a speech therapist test his speech.  He could just be developing speech patterns later than his peers which could be fine.  Do not get alarmed especially other areas are fine.  Just continue to monitor.

  6. Start with his doctor.

If he is not in a situation where he can interact with other children this might be the problem.

HeadStart might be a good option for you check them out.

Even if you make too much to qualify they often have Speech and Language professionals on their staff and can help you determine if there is a problem.

  7. Here in Canada, all 3 year olds are seen by a public health nurse for vaccinations, and they are referred to a speech therapist at this time if she thinks there could be a problem.  I would doubt that he needs therapy, but it may put your mind at rest to check it out with a professional.  In my personal experience, as a mother of 3 boys (now 18, 20, and 24) you do not need to worry if your son has a good vocabulary.  However, you are the best judge.  If there seems to be a problem with the formation of words, such as a physical problem, it should be checked out.  If it is a mispronunciation such as saying "punkin" for pumpkin or "bekfess" for breakfast, it is probably perfectly normal.
