  1. She SHOULD come back because of her babies. Tomorrow, take the cage outside and see if she doesn't come back from hearing the babies chittering for her.

Since the mama parakeet lays an egg every other day but sits on them right away, that's why there is one that she was still feeding. Buy some fresh spinach or swiss chard and hopefully the youngest one will nibble on it.

If the youngest was already eating seeds, or almost weaned, there shouldn't be a problem. The dad will feed it.

In my experience, the other adults will feed a chittering baby if it is persistant enough. Thankfully, this didn't happen when they were very tiny!

It is VERY important to keep the flight feathers trimmed as you now know. Do a search for "How to trim flight feathers" and you'll find step by step instructions.

I also have 2 videos that I made on my YouTube site which shows feather trimming.

You'll have to look through them. There are over 70 videos, mostly about birds.

  2. I am so sorry that she flew away... you should really be careful if your birds wings are not clipped that they do not escape outdoors. That is terribly tragic!

Not to fret about the babies though.  Some breeders remove hatchlings immediately and begin hand feeding them, so with a bit of work and research, you can do the same.  It will actually result in friendlier birds also, but please be careful with them not to let them outside!
