My 4 month old has turned into a light sleeper. Is it okay to use a white noise machine?

I don't want her to become dependent on it, but she sleeps very well through the white noise. She used to sleep through anything when she was a newborn, but now it seems like little noises wake her up. Anyone have this experience? Thanks so much!

  1. Hi,

I found that ceiling fans, the bathroom fan, a/c window units, air purifier...all have helped both my boys when they were young.  I still use one at times, especially if they are not as tired or there is other sounds that could keep them up.  I don't think you have to go out a buy a machine just for the purpose of white noise if you have any of the above mentioned things.

Anything that helps him sleep, and everyone sleeps, it a wonderful thing!

  2. It's a great idea-  I live in the city where it's very loud and there really isn't any other way to do it!

  3. We use a noise machine in our daughter's room.  You can buy cheap ones from Walmart.  Ours has several nature sounds along with a heartbeat sound.  She has always loved the "rain" sound, so that's what we keep it on.

    Good Luck to you!

  4. I use one in each of my kids rooms.  You can buy one at Brookstone that is small so you can travel with it.  They sell cheap ones by Conair and Homedics.  They usually have them for sale in Walmart around the holidays.  We have the Brookstone in my son's room and the homedics in my daughters room.  We have a Holmes air purifier in our room.  It rocks!  It makes the best white noise because it actually has a fan in it.  You can buy replacement filters as well.  When we travel, we take the small Brookstone and Homedics and a Conair for us.

We love the white noise because it helps drowned out noise in the house especially if we have company over and it gets kind of loud with the chatter and laughing.

We only use the white noise sound not the birds, ocean, rain noise , etc.

We also use humidifiers when our kids are sick and they make great noise too but the filters are expensive and only last about a week.  We don't want to kick mold around the room so we don't use it as often because the filters are expensive to continuously replace.  The filters of the air purifier do not need to be replaced nearly as often because it does not involve water so no risk of the filter molding.

  5. i always left the tv or radio on ..it is voices. i thought that  hearing something that was like normal household activities helped so if there is talking in the house (room) then they would be less likely to awake.it worked for me . just try not to have the place dead quiet. they will adjust to sleeping with noise.

  6. I USE THE HUMIDIFIER FOR WHITE NOISE..THE MINUTE I TURN IT ON HE STRATS CLOSING HIS EYES

  7. ABSOLUTELY! Whatever it takes to get that baby sleeping through the night! My kids (4 years old and 8 months old) sleep in a room with a fan going AND instrumental lullabies playing. It's worth it for your own sleep (and sanity)!

  8. I have four children ranging in ages from 14 - 30 so I've had a little experience in this area...

White noice is a good choice. Usually the hum of a fan works really well.  Conditioning your childen to "noise" will help them to develop deeper sleep cycles.  Maybe not LONGER--but definitely deeper.

  9. Sure! I wouldn't worry about her becoming "dependent" on it. If it works, go for it. Lots of kids and adult need a little white noise to sleep. I'd much rather her need noise than perfect silence!

  10. I think it's a great idea. I myself use a white noise machine. When my kids were infants and slept in the same room as me they slept great and I think it's because they heard the noise too. My machine plays different sounds too, like a babbling brook, birds chirping, a heart beat, crickets, and a couple others. I listen to the white noise though. I went out and got another one to put in my boys room and they listen to it. My daughter has a fan. I do think you can get pretty dependent on it though. I can't sleep without mine. But it does help the baby to sleep well.
