My 4 month old male ginger kitten weighs 1.2 kg (2.8 lbs). Is this okay?

I guess I just worry a bit about weight. I'm a first time cat owner. He's totally healthy - runs around, falls upon his food and gobbles it and is lovely. He hasn't been neutered yet but I can't find any guidelines online about what weight kittens should be and how quickly they should be growing. I know there's probably no precise weight as I guess cats are probably like people (all shapes and sizes) but does this sound ok?

Thanks

  1. That weight seems a LITTLE worriesome, but it really depends on the body structure of the cat. The cat IS only 4 months old, so it still has a lot of growing to do. You should post a picture of the cat so we can actually see what it's body frame looks like.

Larger breeds, such as ragdolls and mainecoons, usually weigh around 4 lbs at 3 months. So I would assume the normal cat would weigh around 3-5 lbs at 4 months. But you could have a smaller cat.

The smallest cat on record weighed only 1.7 lbs. The smallest cat alive now is pete, and he weighs 2 lbs at 2 years of age.

  2. My cat is the same age as yours and he weighs amlost 5 pounds ( he's fat ;P )

    I think he's perfecly healthy. ;)

BTW, my cat is ginger/buff too!

  3. My cat is FAT, cut down on treats, that's how she lost weight x

  4. Cats are all different, just like humans and other animals.

A large built big boned cat will weigh more than a small boned petite cat.

I have big and tall built cats that are a muscular and healthy 19 pounds... and on the other end of the scale I have a teeny tiny boned cat who weighs in at a meer 7 pounds yet she is very healthy too. Based on their individual body structure I could never compare them.

It's best to assess your cats weight by it's body condition and not compared to other cats.

Here's a chart to help you do that...

Once you determine if your cat is overweight, you need to be aware that there is NO such thing as dry "diet" food for cats. Dry foods are filled with carbs that make your cat fat. You can't make a dry food without carbs, so there are no dry diet foods.

The proper amount to feed per cat/per day should be about 5.5 ounces of wet (high quality grain free canned or Raw Meat/Bones/Organ) food.

The calories in that amount of food are sufficient for most "normal" sized cats. Of course a highly energetic cat will need more food to keep it healthy, and a lazy cat will need less food to keep it from getting obese. But 5.5 ounces of wet food per day is a good place to start.

Here is a fantastic site that will help you help your cat lose weight!

  5. The general rule for kitten weight is 1 pound per month old. Yours seems a bit underweight. I would have the vet check him out. Ask about your vet's policy for neutering.

  6. It seems a little underweight but I would stress it.  Make sure you are feeding it a good nutritious food and have it examed by the vet.

  7. The weight is Ok.
