and then his Father was in an accident and almost didn't make it. My son went almost 6 weeks without seeing him because he was in Trauma Critical Care. He totally stopped using the bathroom, and we are pretty much back to square one. He just gets so engrossed in what he is doing at that moment he won't stop to go use the potty. I am very frustrated as he starts prek-4 in two weeks and this needs to stop. Have any advice?

  1. you need to take him to his pediatrician. this is not a physical preblem...nor is it because he is a slow learn. this is something that requires professional help. seek the help of a doctor, please. for his sake and your sanity

  2. Remind him that he needs to use the potty. Re-train him. Every time he makes the potty, give him a reward. Also, put regular diapers back on him. Not pull-ups, regular diapers. He might not like it, which could be his inspiration to use the potty.

  3. you need to start over with training and just keep going. Also set up times to use the potty and have him sit intermitenly during the day

  4. He's going through a rough time.  Maybe it would be best to not do pre-k?  Give him a chance to get over what happened and then just jump him straight to kindergarten.  It's not like pre-k is required or necessary.

  5. Since you are the parent in this situation you need to interrupt what he gets so involved in every so often and take him to the bathroom.  A lot of children go through this stage, where their minds are so preoccupied that they "forget" to use the toilet.  The parent needs to step in and "remind" the child that it's time to go.
