  1. Eat some kind of food that gives you energy half an hour before you run. Remember to keep on running past the finish line. A lot of people slow down but you should speed up. Run on your toes and no flat on your feet. I'm in high school i know know a kids in my relay team who when he runs his hands are going all over the place like hes dancing or something. That's why he has the worst time out of everyone else. Good luck! =]

  2. Stack it (the order) so that the people who rely on psychological boosts the most are in the likely position that will help them. Take me, for example. I run better when being chased by someone and I'm trying to stay ahead than I do when I'm behind and trying to catch up. Other people are the other way around. If you've got a guy that really gets furious when he's behind and will work his *** off to catch up...put him right after your slowest guy.

Make sure you stretch really well and eat well. Make sure everyone's spikes are in good order. Do really well in hand offs. It can make a difference, even in the 4x4. My 4x4 team got 3rd in League instead of 2nd because when I handed it off to my guy, he batted at the bottom cause he was nervous and almost knocked it out of my hand. We had to practically stop so I could hand it over. Wasted time, moment, and morale. It also had never happened before- only when it really counted did we s***w that up.

Get friends/team mates to line the 200 corner/2nd turn and cheer. It really does make a difference. Everyone will be cheering the last 100, and when you're running it it's the attention itself that inspires you to go hard...not the cheering. Earlier on though, the cheering can and will make a difference.

Try to pick a baton color that's easy to see. This is basic stuff, yes, but why ignore the basics when you can make sure you've got'em down? There may be something you don't know. Even out in California, it was night by the time we ran the 4x4...our baton is a dark blue. I have bad eyesight and forgot my glasses. I couldn't see the baton. That could have gone very badly. If you can, go with Gold or Silver or something. Who cares how it looks, you know?

Make sure you know the rules. For our 4x4 Final, we had to run in lane the first 500 meters, when usually it's the first 400 only. Don't get DQ'd over something lame.

Remember the psychological aspect. I think (just my opinion here) it's a good strategy to trail behind the other guy (circumstances permitting) until the 200 mark...pass him on the curve, which really breaks your morale cause it's at the point where it's starting to hurt and you're nearing the end...and then explode the last bit, riding on the psychological boost/wave of your adoring supporters and for having just past that guy.

I wouldn't experiment with food and stuff. I really wouldn't. Here's why. If it's really that close that a change in diet is going to help you, then it's going to be a toss up no matter what, you know? But on the flipside, you never know- it could make you sick or something, which I've seen. A guy on my team when I was a junior had me drink this stuff, said it'd help. Like h**l it did. I died. Just don't do it, much more to lose than gain.

I'd say do everything I said above (a lot of which you already know, I know, but I'm being thorough) and go into it with a high head and peace of mind. The confidence will do 8 x more than the advice of that guy who swears by Apex Bars 50 minutes before the race.
