  1. it wouldnt matter anyway....even if you could connect a digital cable to a to analog input, it wouldnt make it digital quality sound. you would just be sending an analog signal thru a digital cable.

  2. If it's a 5.1 receiver it has either (or both) an optical (black square jack) or digital coax (usually an orange RCA jack) input.

You can buy converters from digital coax to optical or optical to digital coax.

Or, for that matter, from digital coax or optical to analog (although you could then only get matrix (e.g. Prologic) rather than discrete surround from the stereo analog output)

  3. Well.. how can it be a 5.1 receiver without any input for 5.1 sound? Is it one of those receiver/DVD players combo units?

Without telling us what inputs it does have, chances are you cannot connect anything to it.

  4. I am sorry to say you most likely do not have a 5.1 receiver. I am guessing it is an older Dolby Prologic receiver.

Pro Logic receivers often have 5 speaker outputs but they do not actually provide 5 independent amplifier channels for full range and 1 sub woofer output at line voltage. They usually only have 4 outputs Left, Center, Right and the rear is one channel with 2 connection points. It will not have discreet amplifiers or amplifier circuits for 5.1 surround sound

You can not get true Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 without a digital connection and 5 independent channels along with a line level sub woofer channel.

If you do get a device that can convert the digital to 6 (5 full range, 1 sub woofer) independent signals. Your receiver probably will not accept the 5.1 input.  I am afraid you need to upgrade.
