Hi everyone,, Well had my little bundle of Joy monday nite,, we are home from the hospital and things are going pretty good,, I am breast feeding and supplementing with formula,, ( on just the breast he's eating every hour,, with a bottle at bed time I can get him to sleep a couple hours at a time) Anyway,, he had a couple very small dirty diapers, maybe a teaspoon,, and then one reg sized one yesterday afternoon but nothing since,, he's having normal wet diapers and doesn't appear to be in discomfort,, or dehydrated. Should I call the dr? Or wait until tomorrow and see if one comes later tonite? I read online as long as they are having at least one a day then it's ok,, is a day,, 24 hours,, or like all day friday was one day and then all day to day is another day? I know this sounds silly and petty,, hubby thinks he's fine and I am just a worry wart. NOOO this is my 3rd baby before you start in about new mom's!!!!

Thanks

  1. there's no need for you to call the doctor - check the poo when it comes (it will come) to see if it's nice and soft/moist/runny - so long as it isn't hard or dry the baby is not constipated.  b/f can go a week but since your also using formula, I'd call them on the 3rd day is there's still nothing and find out what you can give a newborn to help a bowel movement.  In the meantime, gently rubbing circles on his belly and bicycles, very gently, with his legs can help start the bowels moving - not too much as he's just a wee teeny beeny!

  2. At the hospital, they gave me a booklet on breastfeeding and it says that some babies have one good bowel movement a week while others p**p all day (like mine!) I would just call the doc to make sure since you never know and you are supplementing with formula. It doesn't sound bad since he is wetting his diapers.. good lucl!

  3. Congrats on your lil one! My daughter was the same way, and i took her to the e.r. dr told me formula feed babies can go 3-5 days with no p**p. Breastfeed babies 2-3 days. I would wait another day.

  4. Congrats on your new baby!!

I heard that its quite common for breast fed babies to go a day without a bowel movement

If by later on tonight he doesn't have one, call your doctor 1st thing in the morning!

    good luck!
