She just started doing cheerleading a few days ago just so she can have some activities to get into. Last night ( 7 pm) when i picked her up we ate some sonic. She showered up and everything, and around 9 she start crying saying her stomach hurt (i'm 21 and this is my first apartment so i don't have a big medicine cabinet like grand momma has) so i gave her some childrens tylenol. It calmed her down for like a hour, then she started throwing up. I just moved from New Orleans to Texas so down here the medicade is different and instead of having a year round card you have to get one every month, and her papers haven't came in yet for me to put her on it. What should I do? i heard Emetrol is good but i've been watching the news and i heard it isn't good to be giving children all kinds of over the counter medicine.

  1. If she cannot keep anything down, especially liquids, she may need to be rehydrated via IV. It could be so many things (food poisoning, virus, etc.) so it's hard to determine that. I would make her comfortable and try to give her liquids as tolerated. Even tiny sips of water, or flat ginger ale (stir ginger ale to get bubbles out).

You can also make bay leaf tea; just boil 2-3 bay leaves for about 2 minutes, let it sit and add a tiny bit of sugar to sweeten. That has a calming effect on the stomach.

Probiotics are good too. You can get them at a health food store and they are quite pricey, but I always give them to my kids when they are sick, with great results. (You can order a fantastic product called "Tummy Tune Up" via beeyoutiful.com's website--it's the best for sick tummies).

  2. at least go buy the poor girl some pepto bismol, 7-up, crackers, toast, etc. something to help settle her stomache. she probably just ate something bad and doesnt necessarily need a perscription.

  3. You should not have given her the Tylenol. She proly just has the stomach flu or maybe a food poisoning. In both cases there is nothing the doctor can do, it just needs to run its course. Do NOT give her anything to stop the vomiting or diarrhea (if she has that). Its the body's way of getting rid of the germs. She should be better in several hrs or a day.

Also give her plenty of water, pedialyte or sugar free Popsicles (sugar can make vomiting worse). If she seems dehydrated: sunken in eyes, very lethargic or when you pinch her skin and it doesn't bounce back go to the ER.

  4. Go to the doctors if it keeps up for more than 24 hours.

She could have food poisoning, or the stomach flu.

  5. Has she still continued to throw up? She needs fluids in her body to replace the ones lost. Emetrol is the miracle drug, it has the same ingredients as coke basically and it really calms your stomach down. I'd really focus on the liquids, not the foods for right now. She can get dehydrated if she doesn't drink fluids.

  6. Hurting because of the food?   Give her plenty of liquid and let her sleep.

Hurting because of the cheerleading and using new muscles?  How about a nice relaxing bath......and let her stay in for a long while (supervised of course...take a book or something in with you).

  7. If she is still throwing up or isn't drinking any liquids, I'd spend the money to take her to the doc. If the vomiting has stopped and she feels like she can eat or drink something, then she probably just had a bug that passed. The big worry is dehydration, so if she stops drinking liquids, definitely take her in.
