  1. The "smooshed" penny idea is great.  I am 28 and still get one every where I go.  Another thing is shot glasses.  I know not ideal item, but they are small, and cheap and its something you can get for every state, country, most amusement parks, zoos, Disney parks, etc.  I started collecting them when I was about 10, come to find out 14 years later, that my grandfather collected them as well.  (if only I had known while he was alive we could have compared)

Edit:  with the penny idea, they do make books for you to put them in (like the state quarters book, but oval shaped)

  2. Yeah, my mom collects magnets- cool 3D ones and stuff- and its actually pretty cool. She has a ton.

If you go to a lot of places on beaches or with sand, try collecting different sand in tupperware containers.

    Stamps are good.

  3. i started collections of everything when I was young. I would get sea shells, sand (if at a beach type vacation) or those small spoons they sell at stations...i always pretented like they were made just for me bc they were so small or I'd give them to my dollies. As I got older, I started to collect shot glasses or currency, if I was outside the US. Im not a drinker but seriously they sell shot glasses everywhere...this tip is for you to maybe collect and give her later in life.

  4. most places you go to like theme parks and certain stores have a penny crusher there inexpensive and easy to store away and will last a lifetime!

  5. Foreign coins or bank notes.

  6. Toys....I think  Ex. http://astore.amazon.com/wild-planet-hyp...

  7. Sea Shells

  8. I've got a magnet collection that I love. I second that idea.

If you're vacationing on or near the beach and make a habit of it, seashells can be cool, but encourage her to put them into some sort of scrapbook and label which beaches she got them from and what year. She could even incorporate photos from each vacation if so inclined. Otherwise, she'll have a bunch of shells to look at years later, but nothing to make them distinguishable from each other.

  9. post cards of the places your visit ! She can keep them in a scrap book, and also write down (with your help for now) stories about what you did there.  This will create wonderful memories !!!!

  10. Definitely Sea Shells...I agree with Lisa!

  11. key rings or bookmarks or rulers or pin badges

  12. Magnets. Snow globes. Figurines. Post cards.

  13. post cards would be a cheap collection or you could do spoons or magnets. also she could save the travel books but those get kinda beat up.

  14. Magnets

    Sea Shells

    Teddy Bears

  15. try a snow globe collection, that's what I collect. they're great cause its like the entire place in the palm of your hand, and it causes you to remember all of the memories from that area! they really are great gifts!so far i hav about 13!

  16. GLobes

  17. Jewelery!!!  Basic necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings. It is nice to have jewelry from all over the world. You can even introduce different cultures by doing this. Even if you just stay in the states every state has a state stone.

    Or just collect the stones!!

    Hope this helps. Have fun!!!

  18. stickers, candy wrappers, hair accessories, boxes, mcdonald's happy meal toys, angels, kitten or puppy thingies. anything is great as long as she's not collecting dust.

collections are a great part of a kid's childhood because as their collection grows so does their knowledge of it. and for that specific collection, your daughter will be the expert. she may not be an expert on rocks, but she is the most knowledgeable when it comes to where she got this rock and that. this will boost her self esteem and confidence that so many adults lack.

    =)

  19. TIGGER AND POOH

  20. Seashells are great, if you're going to a beach.

Most touristy places will have souveneirs for just that purpose- collecting, like refrigerator magnets, keychains, stuffed animals with the name of the place on them, etc.

My parents always saved everything for me- ticket stubs, receipts, things like that. I still treasure them now. But, since she's 5, I'd suggest something like the seashells, or sand.

Another cool idea, pick flowers from all around, and press them in a book/flower presser and create a scrapbook for her later in life (hs graduation/wedding) with pictures from the vacation and the pressed flowers?

Napkins with restaurant names? Business cards? Stamps?

There are tons of possibilities, a good place to start would be to just have her pick out something she likes in this place ,and from then on just keep getting the same type of thing

  21. See what she is interested in, I know stamps are a pretty thing to collect or even those masquerade faces. I collect lots of things, like stamps, tiger figurines, masks, and Tony Stewart collectible items. Maybe for her it would be good to start w/ little cheap figurines to see how she really gets into it.

    Good Luck. :)

  22. Little collector spoons.

    Postcards.

    Keychains.

    Magnets.

    Flattened pennies from machines.

  23. Do you think you can find the vending machines where you put a penny in and flatten it with a logo as a medallion, for 50 cents?  they are cool.  My 5 year old did it, now she's 10!  with many tokens?  We tried the stuffed animal route, but they got dusty and put in a box in the basement.

If she wants something more visible and tangible, try to get scientific things, under $3 dollars, like plastic animals or whatever, that are somehow educational.  My daughter wants to be a Vet, due to this.  As we speak, she is Whale Watching on the Atlantic, out of Boston.  Sorry????  She's a bit of my obsession and I'm lonely at home, holding the fort.

  24. We are a family that tries to visit different states every year.  My oldest son is a collector, and pretty young he started collecting rocks.  When we get home from vacation, he takes pictures of what he's collected and writes down the names of them and where he got them.

We also visit National Parks as a family.  My other son likes to get a patch every time we visit one.  I sew them onto his backpack so he has a neat record of the places we've been.

My suggestion to you would be to find out what your daughter likes.  Is she a nature buff?  Would she like to get a wildflower book and press flowers from places you've been?  Is she a shopper?  Would she like to get a hat and choose a pin from each place you go?

Another great idea my niece has done is to get a simple postcard from the different places she's been on vacation.  She keeps them in a box as a way to remember really beautiful places she's been.  On the back, she writes a memory from that place.

Good luck!  Have a great vacation!

  25. I have a fridge full of magnets that say the name of the places I have been to, or traveled through. They are small, and not expensive.

My sister takes hotel card/ keys then writes the name of the place on the back of them with a sharpie.

  26. stuffed animals of famos animals like shamue and clide

  27. my grandmother and i, and my mom too.... we all have charm braclets :) for a young girl she also might like the thought of jewelry :)

  28. How about magnets? she can collect magnets from every state/country she has been to.
