  1. Woah..

The Same Thing Happens With My Nikkor 18-55mm dx lens too

but it doesn't focus all of the time

it chooses when to focus, but it doesn't always..

you have to switch it the the manual focus, and them switch the switch ( lol ) a few times, and then it should start working, that always works with me, and it's really weird.

If that doesn't work you have to send it in

  2. Can you manually focus it?

You can send it off for repairs, but find a camera repair shop nearby if possible.  If you can't find one, you can ask your local camera shop for the names of a few.  Some camera shops try to send it off for you.. don't let them if the camera repair shops are close enough.  It will take longer and might cost a little more.  Just take it yourself.  That way you can also talk to the guy doing the repairs personally to talk about what is going on with your lens.

It might be a little expensive to get it fixed.. could very well cost as much as the lens.  Get a quote before commiting.

  3. Call Nikon USA's free live tech help line, (800) NIKON-UX, they are open all the time, 24/7/365

They will give you some good help.  I have had this happen a couple of times over the years with various lenses.  It has had to do with now I attached the lens (in the dark or when making quick lens changes)
