Because we switched his formula to similac sensitive...... I tried giving him applejuice, tried to feed him prunes(but he refuses the prunes and the applejuice hasn't worked) So, is there anything else I can do before I resort going back to the doctors office? We practically have lived there for the last 5 months.... Oh, and he did p**p a tttiiiinny bit, and it was really thick.. so im sure hes constipated!

  1. If after 72 hours he still hasn't "done" either give the e***a recommended above or try an infant size glycerine suppository (but note that actually you have to push it all the way in and leave it, or it won't work).  Either should make him do a big dooey in 5-15 minutes!

  2. My daughter was a preemie and she has this problem STILL she is 18 months old now. Our pedi told us that sometimes babies have problems initiating the "pooping process"....so we invested in glycerin suppositories. you do not insert the suppository all the way (i know it sounds gross) but you barely insert it and hold it there. Within a minute here it comes!!!! And watch out because it will shoot out! It is the craziest thing....i guess they feel something and the need to push it out and then out comes the p**p. It is a life saver at our house and like I said she is 18 months old and still has to have help at times. Hope this helps!!

  3. I can help! If he is constipated and has not been eating he is hungry, here is what you do no more than 1 time a day!

put him on his side on a pillow his bum must be higher than his head, pull his one leg up and then take a skurter  its a plastic tube with a nozzel very cheap and also used to claen a new vorns nose, with a lil  vaseline and not warm bur not cold water and put it in his bum spray the water into his behind be carefull though, the poops gona spray out, and then he sould eat! also you should change his milk back to what it use to be or try something els as it is the milk that is causing all of this it was the same with my girl.

  4. I know you don't want to run back to the doctors, but I would call them anyway. At least he did go a little bit though, but I would have done apple juice as well. When my daughter was constipated as a baby I used to just give her plain water or I watered down the prune juice. Doctors can prescribe laxatives for babies. They have them in a powder form. Good luck!

  5. To tell the truth, this isn't all that uncommon in our house!  My daughter often won't p**p for several days at a time (her twin brother, on the other hand, is a pooping machine).  My doctor advised me that constipation refers to the hardness of the stool, not the frequency.  To be truly constipated, a baby has to p**p hard pellets--a thick stool doesn't qualify as true constipation.

You can try a long warm bath a few times a day, or you can try taking his temperature rectally with a well-lubricated thermometer.  Both things usually work for my little girl.  You can also try giving him an ounce of so of filtered water (once a day maximum!), though I wouldn't recommend doing that on an empty stomach as it could fill him up and he'll miss calories that he really needs.  I would be really careful with both apple juice and prunes unless directed by the doctor, since I assume that your son isn't yet on solids?

It's normal for a baby to have some digestive changes when switching formula, and they also have growth spurts at various ages that can affect their pooping, but if it goes another day or so just to be safe I would call the ped's office and speak with a nurse.   It might save you a visit!

  6. Always check with a Doctor before trying anything. My daughter is four months old and had the same issue the doctor suggested 1oz of water and 1 oz of prune juice mixed every couple of days.

  7. Did you switch his formula suddenly? Any change should be done gradually over a couple of weeks. A sudden change can cause pain, bloating and diarrhoea/constipation. The best thing to do now is to keep giving him the formula and let his body adjust. It could take a couple of weeks for his body to settle down again. Giving other new things like juice and prunes are likely to make things worse.

If you ever need to change his formula again, gradually substitute increasing amounts of the old formula for new.
