my baby nips(when you want him to step up he will nip your hand or either step up. I know i need to discourage this at a young age so that is cute habite doesnt morph into a harmful bite. When ever he bites i dont jerk my finger away and i say sternly "no" and sometimes i leave him alone for 1min. But still he nips.

  1. At five weeks you have a very young bird.  Is he fully weaned?

If you aren't the breeder then know that your baby is still VERY young and going to a new home - away from the only other home he's ever known, away from the only people he's ever known and away from his clutch mates - is THE biggest change in his little world.  Even if he was socialized by the breeder he is still a very frightened little baby.

Please give him time to adjust to his new circumstances and surroundings.  Give him time to adjust to you.  Spend time with him, sitting by his cage and reading or watching television.  Talk softly to him.  Make sure he's exploring his cage and toys and is eating, drinking and pooping well and consistently.  If you have any doubts at all, please contact his breeder.

As your baby gets used to his surroundings and YOU, he will start to feel more comfortable.  At that time you might want to offer him a spray of millet that you are holding in your fingers.  Hold still and let him get brave enough to approach.  Hold still while he figures out that he is safe eating with you holding his food.  Work at his pace, slowly, and earn his trust.  It WILL come.  As he begins to trust you and feel at home in his surroundings, your friendship will grow and he will come around.

  2. you should give it time to know you then start doing i.t but you can still play with it and talk to it.

  3. my love bird used to do this too.

when he nips your finger, say "no" and tap him on the beak. not too hard though. it will take a while, but if you do it consistantly, he will get the idea. eventually, whenever he bites, you will only have to use the word "no", and he will stop.

    good luck

  4. i agree with the others but don't jerk your hand away when he does this it shows him that he can do that when he doesn't want you there and you will leave him alone like he wants
