Question:

My 6 month old hates his vegatables?

We have been weaning him for the past month and he loves his fruit but hates his veg (we generally give him some just before his last bottle of the day). We have tried carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash, parsnip and swede but he does not like any of them, mixed together or on their own. It may sound strange but we have even tried mixing a little into baby rice but he hates that even more. Has anyone else had this happen? I am happy to give him fruit, especially since he likes it so much but would like him to take other things to. Also, when should you start giving your baby meat? Should I be mashing down things for him and maybe he will take his veg mixed in with that? Sorry for all the questions. We are first time parents and haven't a clue about weaning. Thank you in advance.

  1. My babe did not like a lot of veggies in the beginning but strangely the 2 he did like were green beans and broccoli Now he won't touch broccoli. I think the key is to try even more different veggies to find the ones he likes now but don't give up as their tastes change. Also, are you sure they are mushy enough? When weaning it has to be a really smooth puree. Just as a test try a babyfood jar of veggies if he likes that you may need to whip your veggies a bit more. Also, did you try mixing with his bottle milk? I've heard that can work.

  2. My daughter did the same thing!!!

    hope this helps!!

    1. Instead of water, try cooking your baby's vegetables in homemade beef stock or chicken stock.

    2. Try topping a dish of cooked vegetables, whether cut-up or pureed, with grated cheese. Many babies appreciate this subtle difference! Alternatively, you could try serving your baby veggie pieces with a cheese dip!

    3. It may sound unappetizing to you, but many babies enjoy a little pureed fruit stirred into their pureed veggies. Remember, babies have no idea which foods are supposed to "go" together - all they know is what they like and dislike! also remember the v8 commerical where the adults dont eat their veggies too? they came up with v8 Fusion..mixed veggies with fruits but you dont even taste the veggies cuz the acid in the fruit!!!

    4. If your baby is ready for finger foods, offer him a plate of cooked vegetables to feed to himself right at the beginning of his meal. He will be more hungry then... and more likely to give them a try!

5.Stir pureed veggies into your baby's favourite pasta sauce or soup - he won't even notice all those wonderful extra vitamins he's consuming!

    6. Don't overcook your vegetables! In addition to losing their texture, they will lose their colour AND their goodness. To help encourage your baby to eat vegetables, you need to make sure that they're both appetizing and visually enticing!

    7. A good trick for older babies is to sneak grated pumpkin, squash or carrots into your homemade muffins!

    8. When preparing mashed potatoes for your baby, use sweet potatoes instead of white. They are nutritionally superior and an excellent source of beta-carotene.

    9. Just because adding salt to baby food is not recommended does NOT mean that his veggies need to be unseasoned! Find out more about using garlic, herbs and aromatic spices to liven up your baby's meals.

    10. Lead by example - eat lots of veggies yourself, in front of your baby and with a big display of enjoyment! Your enthusiasm may be infectious... and he just might follow your lead!

  3. Dont give him fruit first then of course he wont eat the veggies. He can start on meat if he has been though the fruit and veggies. You might then get him to eat the combined little meals that have veggies in them.

  4. I'd try mixing some veg in with the fruit. I know it sounds really odd for us, but babies have a different idea of what tastes good! Pear is a good mixer as it's such a sweet fruit. My daughter was the same and gradually got better.

I believe you can start introducing meat into their diets at around 6 months. I recommend "Annabel Karmel's complete baby and toddler meal planner" as it's full of tips and info and some great recipes.

  5. If you are talking about jarred food, then I don't blame him!

Usually once they try people food, though, they'll eat anything. At that age, my son was pretty much eating all table food - of course, smushed and mashed, etc. Once they have something with a bit of seasoning, it usually encourages their tastebuds. Start with mashed potatoes and mushy peas, and go on from there.

  6. has he any teeth yet, some babies like carrott sticks, its difficult, but trial and error is best, usually if you try there favourite and only add a tiny bit of veg to it, it works, also try making a little bit of minced meat with gravy, add some tates and carrotts, you could purify if it seems to stodgey, good luck, dont get stressed over eating, else your baby will get more upset, take it easy and im sure it will work out ok.

  7. my 6 month old is the same!  he was choking and spitting it out like anything!

but i found out is that i wasnt pureeing them enough.  now i add lots of milk to them and puree down to a fruit like consistency (cos the fruit has lots of water in!)  i tried the theory by giving him a ready made one from a pot (organix) and he loved it - so then i knew it wasnt the vegetable savory flavour he didnt like.  i will gradually add less milk and make them less pureed.  saying that he still enjoys the fruit best!! (wouldnt you!!?)

i have started to give him meat and protein dishes from anabel karmel s 2nd stage weaning book.  again i mix them with lots or milk to give it a runny consistency.

good luck.  by the way anabels recipe books are good - i even like the taste of the recipes.  also gina ford guide to weaning is like a fools guide, telling you exact times and amounts. please note that i'm no advocate of gina fords regimes but this book is  a good guideline i find (as i have no clue!)

  8. I wouldn't worry about it right now. My youngest refuses veggies, he is 4 now and still wont eat them. I trick him, I put spinich in speghetti and there is a great new juice, Fusion by the V8 people that is veggie juice mixed with fruit juice so it taste great. These are things to try when he is a bit older, it would be too harsh on his tummy now. I would wait for meat untill about 8-9 mo. old.
