He has a hard time passing BM. It takes three days from the last time. Doctor said add pear juice with formula. This is the third time this has happened. Any thoughts other than pear juice? How do I soothe him other than doing the bicycle with his legs and massaging his tummy and back? We are using Enfamil Lipil with Iron.

  1. The best way to regulate your child's BM is to put 8 ounces of water in the baby's bottle with 1-2 table spoons of sugar. Its natural, it won't harm the child and it'll help the child have a BM after the child drinks a few or all 8 ounces. It won't cause any discomfort, extra gas, etc. You won't have to change the formula and the baby will get the amount of iron that he needs. This is a natural reaction to the iron and it'll happen no matter what age a person is. The sugar water will help. Take care.

  2. White grape, peach and pineapple juices are also good for the bowels.  But with the three-day gaps, the struggle to push his dirt out and the fact that this has been going on for the long time - this has become more urgent, it's important to get rid of all that backed up doodoo to make sure he doesn't accumulate any more intestinal toxins.

So either give him a mini-e***a (you can do it with the nose sucker, insert a few squirts of soapy water) or an infant-size glycerine suppository.  Either of which should make him do some doos in 5-15 minutes (otherwise you'd have to take him to ER).

  3. Does he actually have a hard time, or is he just one of these kids who doesn't go that often?

You are doing your son no favours at all trying to force him to be a frequent baby if he naturally goes every three days. Everyone's different.

  4. Add a teaspoon of dark Karo syrup to his bottles until he has a bowel movement.  Then adjust as he gets regulated.

  5. Prune juice helps. And I know it may sound gross, but I had to do this. Take a themometer, and put a little vaseline on it.  Then stick in in his but just like half an inch. This is sppossed to stimulate him to p**p. I didn't like doing it, but it worked

    Good Luck

  7. You may want to talk to your doctor about switching to a low iron formula--iron makes your poo harder. Be sure to talk to your doctor before doing this. Keep up with the pear juice-it work really well. I had to use it on my second all the time. You may want to try massaging his r****m or hold him facing you and with his diaper off or loose massage his left butt cheek clockwise and his right butt cheek counterclockwise. This will help him relax a little bit so that he can pass everything. At his young age, I do not suggest suppositories, enemas, or laxatives. Be sure to call your doctor for more suggestions. Good luck! I know how terrible it is when they have these kind of issues. My second was constipated nearly all the time until she was a year old! They just grow out of it I guess.

  8. I also had problems with my son when he was a baby we put karo syrup in his bottles- it works well also when it got really bad we used prune juice- be careful how much you give him- you need you give it some time to work before giving him more or something else or he will get diarrhea. I would definitely ask the doctor about switching his formula- some docs don't like to do this but the earlier the better if he is going to have to switch because the younger they are the easier they can adjust to new formulas. Be patient because it will probably be a while before anything works out. You will have an adjustment period when he might spit up new formula and the bm can change alot from formula to formula. Good luck.

  9. When my baby was a newborn, he only went once every three days.  The doctor said as long as he's not pooping pellets, it's ok.  We switched him to Similac Isomil and after a few months he became more regular.  If it's been more than three days, you can always stick the tip of a thermometer in some vaseline and then into his r****m.  It helps stimulate the bowels.
