Question:

My 6 year old daughter is so extremely shy!?

She just looks straight ahead or bows her head if someone talks to her. Her first grade teacher has been tutoring her in math one day a week after school because she believed that she did not know the answers. She informed me this past tutoring session that she knows all the answers but her major problem is that she is too timid to say. She has a major problem communicating at home. She is not one to talk to me about anything. Now, at home, she is my LOUDEST child. she is silly with a huge desire to be the family clown (I am thankful that she saves this behavior for home!) Any suggestions at all on what to do?

  1. I had a friend that was like that and we found out that she had been sexually abused.  She would get a stomach ache every time her mother told her they were going to visit her grandfather, so they eventually figured it out.  Is your daughter having any signs other than the communication problems?

  2. OMG...she sounds just like my daughter who is going to start kindergarten soon...she won't talk to anyone but at home she is loud and also the family clown...i will be getting suggestions from your question too...i'm so worried that my daughter won't even be able to ask simple questions at school b/c she is so shy. thanks for asking this question..hope you gets lots of good answers.

  3. She has to get used to being around starngers, that's all. She 's just like any other 6 year old

  4. she'll grow out of it :] i used to be exactly like that when i was little now im more outgoing and social

  5. She could have ' Selective mutism '

    Google it.

  6. take her to a class that will help her get over her shyness.if she gets over her shyness she may get out and do more things

  7. does she talk at all at school? if so, you can keep building on it with small rewards for success (but not punishments for not doing so, that will just stress her out more).

if she really can't talk at school even though she's loud at home, then check out www.selectivemutism.org.  if it sounds like her, talk to your pediatrician and get her some help.  my oldest daughter was like that, and after getting help from the pediatrician and doing a lot of work with her, she's now chatting away, and raising her hand at school.
