We are so upset because we thought it was going to be a waterproof half cast. Has anyone survived their kid with a broken leg? How did you pass the time? We have done so much drawing, walking and videos. After 10 days then he is suppose to be in a half cast for 2 or 3 weeks.

  1. you are so upset?? It is just a cast and he will walk again. Hire a wheelchair and take him out. you can do day trips. Heaps of kids go through this.

  2. It needs to heal. You have no alternative. It's one of the breaks but you have to try to get through it.

  3. it could be worse...last summer my 19 month old was in a body cast for 5 weeks!! give him some markers to color on the cast, teach him how to make lanyard keychains. Walmart has a kit that makes like 20 of them for $7, they also have pompom keychains that look like puppies and kittens for $2 a kit that makes 4 of them. Reading is good. let him make birdfeeders out of colored popsicle sticks...

  4. There's nothing you can do. Your just going to have to wait. Sorry!

  5. its tough, especially in the summer.  Make big plans for when it comes off so he has something to plan for!

ask him waht he wants to do

    watch a sports game

start a project like a model car or soemthing that will take time

    picnics at the park

    zoo

  6. That can happen if the leg is taking longer to set than expected, it's nothing to worry about.  Now would be a good time to try to get your child interested in reading.  My father used to read me to sleep, and when I broke my arm and couldn't do a lot of the things that I used to do, he showed me endless adventures in books, and now I have an insatiable love of reading, and have always been ahead of my class in almost everything because I've already read something on the subject.  Trust me reading is a great bonding experience with your child and a great way to pass the time.

  7. Yep, I know what you're going through. A few summers back we were getting ready to leave for vacation and my son comes running in the house to tell us he fell off a wood pile and thought he broke his arm. This was 2 days before  we were going to leave for vacation. As it turned out he needed surgery. Bye bye vacation. The next summer he was signed up to go to Boy Scout summer camp. We were at his cousins graduation party and he took a bad fall and fractured his other arm. No Boy Scout summer camp that summer.

The healing process is usually long and drawn out. It takes time and you have to follow doctors orders to heal properly.

Hope your son is soon back to doing all the things he likes best!

  8. My adult brother was in a full leg cast for a year and a half because part of his leg bone was just powder and the doctor didn't want to put a rod in it. He healed 100% and his leg is perfect now. See, it could be worse!! : o I think it depends on the type of break and the rate of bone healing and is very individual.

You might get some new board games to try and maybe have him help you bake cookies and learn how to make fun simple foods that the family can eat. You could also make a funny video and post it to youtube so he could watch his "creation" on the monitor. If he doesn't have a radio controlled toy car or airplane, that is something he could do outside while sitting down. Maybe he would enjoy painting on a tee shirt that he could wear later. (you can get the fabric paint at a craft store)

Being in a cast is awful but it will all be over in about a month. I'm sure the doctor knows that it is better to be safe than sorry. It is hard to keep a 6 year old from overdoing it once that cast is totally off so they probably leave it on a little longer than they might for an adult.

    Good luck!! : )

  9. My younger brother, Mathew broke his leg last summer playing tackle football. It was the week we where going to europe. i wasn't going so he stayed. My neighbor drove us around, we took him to the beach and he and i competed to see who'd make a better sand castle, went to the arcade, watched movies a lot!, and when it was gone we had a HUGE pool party to celebrate the cast coming off. he may not of played football but it was fun!
