My son brought home his spelling words last night and he has about ten or so. I was going over them and one of the spelling words is "kill" is this okay? I think I should call the school and ask why my son who is in kindergarden needs to know how to spell Kill....Any advice would be great.

Thanks again in advance

  1. kill is a word. kids should know how to spell words!

  2. CENSORSHIP FTW!

Do not complain. Especially not if you let your kid watch television, go outside, or read. You wouldn't want them to know that killing exists, would you!

  3. Children need to learn to spell all kinds of words but this does seem inappropriate.

  4. Hmmm.. well, I think you might be overreacting just a little bit.

  5. You're overreacting--kids need to learn what death is at SOME point...

  6. Did you ever tell your child to wash his hands to "kill" the germs after he used the toilet and before he ate?!?

Did he ever hear you tell someone to "kill" that bug - wasp - mosquito - snake - whatever?!?

Did he ever hear you or your husband or some other person talk about something that "just kills me!" Even though you meant it in humor?

Have you consulted with the teacher instead of complaining to the school - to find out if this is standard or your child's class is being picked on by an abusive teacher?!?

This really sounds like "overkill" to me.

  7. Kill is ok.  Its when he has impale for a word you should get worried.

  8. It's not like he doesn't already know that word, right? What difference does it make if he can or can't spell it?

If his lists are like the ones my kids got in 1st grade, they have all these rhymes -- are words like will, pill, mill, fill and chill on there?

  9. I agree he shouldn't even be hearing about that word or know what it means yet. And guys above you can mess off because this isnt your problem.

  10. dolores dont worrie about it this thing happen so often but if you dont like the fact that he got that word for spelling ask to talk with the teacher about it

  11. Yeah, I agree that is pretty harsh.

  12. Kill is a word.  It is important that the kids learn all words.  You kill bugs, you can kill a car engine.  It only has the meaning you attach to it.  Don't be so uptight.

  13. idk, but kids do need to know how to spell this word. call the school just in case.

  14. He's an American. He should learn this word for sure.

  15. At that age they learn words in a spelling lesson that follow a particular rule. Chill.

  16. they're not telling him to kill someone, they are teaching him how to spell basic words. He needs to learn it sooner or later. Why don't you take this opportunity to teach him what the word means and why it would be wrong to kill something.

Besides not all killing is bad. Don't you want your son to wash his hands and kill those germs before he eats dinner?

    I think you're overreacting.

  17. No that is not right and u r NOT overacting!!! tell the teacher that she should take that off the list!! it is inappropriate.

  18. Honestly I understand your impulse but I think you're overreacting.  By 6, my kids were reading things like Charlotte's web and it starts with Fern urging her dad not to kill the runt pig.  Too much sheltering is not doing kids any favors.....

  19. its not that big of a deal. i mean its a shock but he will always have things that don't seem right in school. unless he goes to a christian one.

  20. get over it

  21. You are NOT overreacting!

My son is in Kindergarden, and his words are " what", "are", "like", "that" etc.

If I saw the word "kill" I would call the teacher right away. There is no reason to learn that word right now. They are supposed to be learning "high frequency" words. Memorizing them. Kill, is not in that catagory!

would "hate" and "death" be appropriate at this stage??

    i don't think so!!!!
