She is up from 7 am to 7:30 and gets up once or twice in the night. She averages about 20-22 oz a day.

  1. When my son was younger the doctor told me that the best indicators of whether he is getting enough is behavior and rate of weight gain.  Although little ones sometimes have to be prompted to eat in the beginning, a 7 week old is pretty good at letting you know if she is hungry.  Also, she should be gaining 1-2 ounces per month.  Finally, is she back to her birth weight and beyond?  The best idea is to ask the doctor, and if you are not comfortable with his/her response, ask a second doctor.

I was told that a baby should eat every two hours or on demand whichever is sooner), but I don't recall when that policy changes.

P.S.  The first few months are the hardest, but somehow they manage to grow up happy and healthy, so try not to worry too much and enjoy this special time.  GOOD LUCK!

  2. I think at 7 weeks, 1 to 2 ounces is not enough.  I would give your baby a 4 ounce bottle every 3 to 4 hours and see if she is taking it all. My daughter was taking about 4 to 5 ounces at 7 weeks every 4 hours, which a 6 ounce bottle before bedtime and she slept all night.  Sometimes I would give her 1 or 2 more ounces if she was still fussy.  It all depends on your baby.  Go to Similac.com - they give you a chart as an average on how much formula you should give your baby.

  3. If she's growing, then she's just fine. My daughter is almost 5 months old and has never taken more than 4 ounces in once sitting. She likes just a little and often.  She's growing at a steady rate, some kids just have tiny tummy's. She'll let you know when she's hungry and when she's full.

  4. I have a 6 week old who just finished a 6 oz bottle on his last feeding. He was drinking between 2-4 ounces every 2-3 hours the last couple of weeks. This week he started to finish the whole 4 ounce bottle. Today, I decided to try him out with a six ounce bottle. Low and behold, he finished the whole thing.

Every baby is different. As long as he is having enough wet diapers, he should be okay.
