my child has a doctor's appointment on tuesday but, I'm concerned that i should take him to the er. He started getting low grade fevers with an upset stomach and headaches. This lasted for about 2 days then symptoms cleared. He was fever free for about 2 days though he still complained of a slight headache. After he ate dinner today he got a fever of 101.9 and he had an upset stomach.. He shows no symptoms of a cold and when the fever is gone he plays and eats normally. I just don't know whats going on. Has anyone ever gone through this with their child?

  1. sounds like it's viral. but it's hard to tell without some blood work. if he spikes a high temp take him to the er. for the time being keep his meals light. jello, clear soup maybe some rice or crackers, keep him hydrated with water, popsicles, jello, pedialite. always small amounts. remember his stomach is the size of his fist.  please don't give him an ice bath, a temp of 101.9 isn't bad. in fact it helps to kill off infection. when a child has a higher temp, like 104 or 107 he can have a convulsion, but that doesn't mean he will die. so relax and observe him . keep light clothes on him, like a tee shirt and shorts.

  2. give him an ice pack, or a cold bath. I think if the temperature reaches 103? to take him to the ER, also medicine can't hurt

  3. Call the E/R  Charge Nurse............. and she'll give you idea's of what to do........

  4. sounds like a virus to me. it's not uncommon for fever to go away and then come back during the course of a virus. I would be more concerned if the fever was going on continuously. that fever is not very high at all. It sounds to me like a vurus but if these symptoms do not go away I would make an appointment with the doctor for Monday.

  5. I'm also the father of two young children... One of them had fever... I know how you are feeling today... My advice is to go and see a doctor as soon as possible... I'm not trying to scare you... You must understand why your child had fever... One of my daughter nearly died of fever... I didn't had the money to take her to the doctor nor to buy her medicine... Thank god I was able to receive a payday loan of around $1500 within one day http://shrunklink.com/awtc ... Perfect for Medical Expenses and Emergencies ... It's not normal to get short fever after dinner... I've experience it myself... I'm just willing to help you out before your child gets really sick... It maybe something he had eaten... But we must know what is was cause it's not normal that a small dish of food is causing health damage... So my advice as an experience father is to know what causes the sickness not just to get medicine...Fever is not a disease, instead, it is a symptom that can accompany many childhood illnesses, especially infections...It is important to keep in mind that a fever is not always sign of a serious illness... I'm not trying to scare you, I've just nearly lost my child last year...

    God Bless!

  6. A fever is nothing to wait for an appointment. it's ice bath time or hospital time

  7. My daughter is 8 years old, and between the ages of 5 and 7 she had symptoms like these.  I would give her a full dose of tylenol and a full dose of ibuprofen at he same time(i am a nurse, and this will not counteract - unless your child is allergic to either of these) and it would work most of the time, i would sometimes resort to a room temp bath, and trust me, if he has a fever, it will be freezing to him, and he will probably throw a fit,,,,but this is necessary, and not a choice for him.  If that doesn't work, take him to the ER, and make sure you tell them that you have given him Tylenol and Ibuprofen, they will need to know.

It could be a sign of an infection.

  8. I agree to alternate between tylenol land motrin.   Our doctor's rule has always been (and we've had more than one over the years)  if the child has a temp for more than three consecutive days or if the child's temp reaches 103 to call and come in or be directed to go to the ER depending on the situation.

  9. I would not wait until tuesday to take him to the doctor. If he is not better take him to a urgent care center or the ER.

  10. He needs to be taken to the hospital.

  11. He has a virus.  101.9 is not high.

  12. from the condition, i think it is a viral infection. The temperature is not high, but it is on off fever. My advice, it is too late to wait until the next appointment, because the viral infection will spread over the body in faster rate. Furthermore, the virus also do not wait till the appointment. For your case, better to go to the ER, and tell about your son condition. About the on-off fever, i'm very sure, although this case maybe not so emergency, but the unusual things will make them think twice before get you in. Save your son first.

  13. I was always told with a persistant fever to give Tylenol and then two hours later give Motrin.  Keeping them on a two hour switch (tylenol, motrin, tylenol, motrin) will help combat their fevers.  I wouldn't hold off until Tuesday for a doctor unless you can keep the fevers from spiking too high.  101.9 isn't that high, really.
