He's had it on for about 5 days now and isn't eating much at all because his food is getting stuck between the expander and the roof of his mouth. His favorite food is pizza and I cut it up in tiny bite size pieces and he couldn't eat it. School is starting soon and I'm worried about him at lunch time. He's so fustrated. Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

  1. I had a palate expander in Jr. High, and it was a horrible experience, but I learned a whole new way to talk, eat, and breathe. Your son will as well, it just takes time. You have to do completely different movements with your mouth to be able to eat, the only way to get better is to practice. Basically, have him eat more at home (doesnt have to be more food, just spread it out so he has more time practicing). He will get the hang of it, trust me.

He will have to start with "mushier" foods that won't get too stuck, and work his way up to pizza. He will i no time though, so don't worry, his muscles just need to figure it out, they are made to do that!

  2. I have the exact same problem, though i'm 14. I can't eat anything, I miss my normal foods (pasta, chips, etc). and i can't eat any of it! So far i'm eating soft foods (cakes, breads, eggs, soups) etc. For your pizza problem, i'd wait about a week or 2.

  3. I am sure something like that is painful and isn't making it very comfrotable to eat.  You can try something like localized anesthtic before he eats (avaliable in the toothpaste, dental isle).  Otherwise I would stick to softer foods until it feels better.
