She needs more help with math and reading. Does anyone have a good idea of what i can do to work with her or a good program that i can put her in?

I called Sylvan learning center. The cost is outrageous. I have thouhgt financing it. But i dont anyone that has used the program and scared of spending the money and not working....

  1. Well, math games

and try to look for some online tutoring thats free.

And try going after school with the teacher for some help.

  2. Try to use free study resources such as ones on the internet or go to your local library and bring your daughter. The library has many resource books that specialize in different fields. I am sure there are some suitable for your daughter. If she is not at all interested in learning, tell her the rewards in doing homework and learning. Such as "You will be the smartest in your class!" Say to her that it is a good thing to raise her hand an know the answers. Also, when she gets good grades on her homework, a special weekly treat could also push her to learning.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Have you talked with the teacher?  They would be able to give you some resources.

What is her learning style?  Are you do extra "worksheets"?  Maybe she doesn't handle those very well...and unfortunately in 2nd grade the teachers use them quite a bit.  When you work with her at home get her more active while she is practicing the concepts.

Reading... I've used a reading book called Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann.  It's not even 20 minutes a day... "The Proven SRA DISTAR Reading Program Adpated for Parent and Child"... For children that are having difficulty learning to read.  Under $20...Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.  Check it out.  I'm not sure what difficulty she is having with reading but this may help you.  Good luck.

  4. Depending on where you live, you can advertise the need for a tutor on craigslist.com. I can tell you that the "extra work" you are giving her is probably not benefiting. She has worked all day at school and done homework and is probably burnt out. Go to a schoolbox store or teacher supply store and tell them your concerns. They will be able to steer you in a direction of supplemental, fun materials. Use the materials on the weekends when she is not tired of learning.

  5. Go to Kumon, they help alot. But if u don't like that, get a tutor. It helps a LOT better becaust it's one on one. Hope I helped! :)

  6. Have you spoken with her teacher or a school counselor?  Sometimes there are teachers at the school who will tutor after school for extra money (and will not cost as much as Sylvan).

A lot of teachers will tutor a couple of days a week over the summer for extra money, too.  Remember, teachers don't make a lot, so you may be surprised who is willing to do it.

You may want to approach the teachers of the classes she will be in NEXT year.  They will know what she needs to know to do well in their classes.

Something that you can do at home is take her to the library and let her pick books she likes to read.  Read with her, to her, take turns reading.  Let her read to her siblings, her grandparents, her pets, the neighbors whoever will listen.

You can also have her go to http://www.starfall.com/ where they have games and fun things to read.

For math practice, try http://www.rainforestmaths.com/ where they have fun math games to play.

    Good luck,

  7. If might be that she is talking and not paying attention in class I did the same thing in my youth. If you talk to the teacher about calling on her more and simply checking if she understands it could make a big difference, especially if she usually doesn't have to pay attention in younger grades to understand things. If this doesn't work walk to the school councilor about tutoring, and get flash cards and things like that for her to go over BY HERSELF with NO HELP and check it after she's done, and things like that. Games are the best things for Young children to learn with because it keeps them interested and they learn alot more.

  8. you can hire a tudor for her, you can teach her new study habits, you can invite her friends over so they can study together and they will now what she probably doesn't understand

  9. Have you spoken to her guidence counselor? Go to your community center as well  any college and seek out college students. Seek students studying to be teachers. You can also seek help by asking for mentors at your place of business. Also you can go to your local high school go to the guidence office there and ask for students who excel in their academics. When they give you refferals interview a few offering a modest dollar amount maybe just $40 a wk for 2 to 3 1 to 1.5 hr sessions.

  10. teach her by playing games or play a memory game with her.
