My 84 733i BMW has a paper oil filter but, Bosch makes a can style filter,can i use it?

Yes - the outer part of the filter just covers the paper pleats

I'm sure Bosch makes many can style filters but none of them are made for the big six inline BMW motors. There were some kits available many years ago that allowed the filter location to be changed and use a disposable can type filter or two. But they never worked well and leaked all the time. Count yourself lucky you have one of the best filter type systems ever devised.

Changing the filter is messy and takes a little more time but you get used to it.. Plus the filters can be bought for around 4 to 5 bucks Vs. 10 to 15 bucks..
