My 8yr. old's baby tooth w/filing is starting to break up?

since its a baby tooth w/ filing, should he see a dentist, it is not hurting him?

  1. It is quite possible that it's just coming out naturally. As the permanent tooth grows in, it eats away at the roots of the baby tooth so that it eventually falls out. Now that the tooth doesn't have much structure left, there is not much there to hold the filling so it's breaking away. He will probably be able to get the pieces out himself. Keep an eye on it. If it does start to bother him, then take him to the dentist. But, at his age, I'm sure it will come out on its own. On the other hand...

    Which tooth is it? Did he get his teeth early? The baby molars generally don't get replaced until he's 10-12. It may still be a good idea to take  him to the dentist to see where the permanent tooth is. The tooth may not be bothering him NOW, but if the permanent one is still 2-4 years away, there is plenty of time for the tooth to break away more leaving it open to decay and infection. If he has a routine checkup coming, mention it to your dentist then.


  2. I would at least call the dentist and let them know. You don't want him to choke on a piece of tooth, and you don't want him to get an infection.
