my 9 year old was diagnosed with sleep apnea through a sleep test.. she goes on july 16th to have her tonsils removed and to make sure her adnoids haven't grown back.... my question is does anyone else have a child around this age that has this and what have they done for your child to resolve the problem..they said that if she still stops breathing after the tonsils are out then they will probably give her a c-pap machine...does anyone have a child that has to use this?

  1. It's funny you should ask....My 6.5 year old son just had his tonsils and adenoids taken out for just that reason!  It was only a week ago tomorrow, but his breathing seems to already be better @ night.  I can't tell yet if it has improved his sleep since he's still recovering (14 days).

I can tell you that he's doing remarkably well from the surgery.  From what I understand, taking out their tonsils is all most kids ever need to cure their apnea.

It's amazing how many kids actually have apnea, and it has nothing to do w/ obesity in many cases!

I wish I could be more help.

  2. quit giving her McDonals

  3. I am wondering if your child has behavior issues.  My Grandson stops breathing all through the night with sleep apnea and research indicates this could be why his ADHD is so severe.

I have never heard of a child on a c-pap machine.  My Dad has one but he is over weight.  Is she over weight?

  4. We have a number of friends with kids who use a C-pap.  My husband uses a similar machine called a Bi-pap.

Your child is so fortunate to have had her sleep apnea diagnosed properly.

As I'm sure you know, sleep apnea is not just an annoying problem.  It can result in the death of brain cells, and early strokes/heart attacks.  If he apnea does not resolve with surgery, the c-pap is not just helpful.  It will save her life.

  5. Well, I'm 17 and I have it, but I've had the effects of it since I was about 4. When I was 6 I had my adenoids out and my tonsils came out at 10. I sleep with a cpap machine and it works WONDERS for me. It is a machine that pushes some air into your nose through tubes or a nasal mask so that you have a constant supply of air. Apnea means that she is stopping breathing at night, and this machine will keep her breathing. It takes some getting used to. It took me about a week to get used to mine, but I sleep LOADS better and I have more energy.

I am not overweight either. My BMI is 20, which means I am on the lower end of average weight. I am very muscular and I play football, hockey, and golf.

  6. I do not have a 9 year old child, but my father was also diagnosed with sleep apnea.

He tried the c-pap machine but it was very annoying during the night. The machine made noise and the mask didn't allow him to move around comfortably during the night.

I hope that your 9 year old's problem is solved after her tonsil removal. I wouldnt recommend the machine.
