Question:

My 90 Force 2 stroke dies when I put the boat in gear. Are the plugs fouling? Maybe the timing is off?

  1. If I could see your spark plugs, I could tell you whether the plugs were fouling.  But since you're there and I'm not, how bout you go outside and look, and tell us whether they're fouled?

    If you didn't take the flywheel off or mess with the carb linkage, then timing is not the issue.

    3 things your motor needs to run:  compression, spark, fuel.

    Two possible approaches:

    1.  guess randomly and throw parts at it till it starts running;

    2.  a few basic tests, and just fix what's wrong.

    Do a compression test, all cylinders should have about the same PSI, within 10 lbs or so lowest to highest.

    Spark test, on an inline tester with the gap set at 7/16", look for sharp blue spark on all cyl.

    Check fuel tank for water/debris, make sure fuel line holds pressure, tank vent is open and clear, fuel is fresh.

    if all of the above checks out, rebuild your carbs.

  2. Did you mix the fuel and oil according to directions? sounds like the mixture is off....

  3. can you rev it in nuetral if so check the throttle linkage the momentary kill is probably in the wrong position.

  4. Check your mixing rate with the oil and gas. It should be fifty to one. It sounds like it's running too rich.

    Good luck.
