My 9yr. old daughter sleepwalks sometimes, so I placed an alarm on my door. Can the alarm startle her?

If my daughter sets off the alarm can something happen to her mentally? I heard that you cannot wake or talk to someone when they are in the state of sleepwalking because they can go crazy. Is this true? What should I do?

I'm not entirely sure about the crazy part ( I really wouldn't think so) but you will most definately give her a terrible fright doing something like that.

As far as a talking is concerned, I used to have a friend who sleepwalked, and could carry on partial conversations, while sleeping.  Talking isn't much of a problem.  My understanding is that it's not a good idea to startle a sleep walker, but I think that has more to do with the strong chance, they might wake up disoriented, and accidentally get hurt.

Really, the best thing to do, is to bring this up to your doctor, and try to get some reputable advice / reading material.

No if anything it will startle her some when she wakes up but it will not harm her.  My daughter use to sleepwalk and we had an alarm put on her bed so if she got out of it we knew, sometimes she didnt even hear it and just kept going.  Make sure you have safety chains on all doors that are out of her reach to keep her from wondering outside and things that could harm her in the house put up.  you also need to address this with her pediatrician as well to get to the bottom of it and find out why she is doing it.

Thats a legend, yes you can wake them. It doesnt hurt them. Its the same as if you were waking them up while they were in bed sleeping.

edit: and DO NOT chain there door shut, what if there was a fire? or a flood? bad idea

no no no you dont put the alarm up ya take your belt and if she gets up ya hit her good and when she finally says stop that means its time to use the metal part

My brother used to sleep walk so we just put a chain lock on the outside door so he couldn't get out. He was also about 9 at the time.
