My AC is a split central system. I keep it at about 76. The temp outside is about 98 right now on average. It cools the house, but stays on all the time. I had the evaporator coils cleanded in May. Thanks!

  1. Jsweep is a little off!! 76 degrees is a good temp. to maintain. I,however, am from Michigan. We design for 90 degrees. The best you can expect from mechanical cooling is about 20 degrees below ambient. If you are above your design temp, you will lose. I don't know what the design temp for Texas is. Just remember the 20 degrees drop, and you should be OK.

  2. That is not what split system means ,Thor... split system is separate evap coil and outdoor condensing units as opposed to package units that contain all components in one cabinent. You may be thinking of the term" mini splits' that describe the Sanyo units and their counterparts.

  3. With a split system you have a control in each room. So any of the rooms calling for cooling will keep the condenser running outside.

But you also said central so maybe you didn't mean a split system.

If it is not getting too cold it is doing what it should be doing. At 95 degrees and above outside the unit has a harder time cooling and efficiency drops. So nearing 100 it doesn't surprise me at all it will run all the time.

Beyond that, it depends on the size of the unit, the size of the house,  and the amount of heat gain, insulation, door openings, window types, shades, and the like in the house.

  4. if you want the a/c to turn off----turn up the temp one degree at a time (let it run when you do this)----if it does not turn off and you have it set to 76 and it is 80 outside there may be a problem

if you want the a/c off --- set it to 98 degrees....it will turn off!
