Our African Grey is 4.5 years old and seems happy. We only lock him in his cage if he bites and usually for around 10 min. He gets lots of attention from family members and friends and lets almost everyone hold him. We usually give him a shower every weekend along with our two Indian Ringnecks and I will clip their wings if needed while they are getting their shower. All of our birds are on pellets, fresh fruit and vegetables we also give them peanuts as treats.

  1. hope this helps parrots pluck because of stress, or irritants like cigarette smoke, or from boredome so try moving his toys around or get him a new one. they do make a bitter apple spray that will deter plucking at any pet store.

  2. Our African Grey does this too! Except that ours plucks ALL his chest feathers out! Our vet said it's because his skin gets too dry. He only does it in the winter usually. Get a mister bottle and mist him daily. There are also some different bird sprays that you can get for him to help moisturize his little birdy skin!

  3. Some Grey's have peanut allergies (just like people) causing an itch under the skin. Try cutting out the peanuts and replacing them with other nuts like walnuts or almonds. Also, as for dry skin, this is what I do for mine, it's healthy for them, can't hurt him and has amazing healing properties. Buy a bottle of aloe vera gel (I get mine at Whole Foods Market) organic if you can find it. After the shower rub about 2 teaspoons into your hand and wipe him down with it, especially under the wings. It's good for his wings and has analgesic properties to help if he is feeling something under his wings that causes him to pluck. You sound ike you take very good care of him, just give these to things a try and let us know how it goes.
