Question:

My Allstate insurance guy is trying to tell me that Pleasure does not cost less than Drive to Work for our car

Is this true? I am pregnant and not working anymore. I do have one accident from a year ago which of couse raised our rates.

My husband has better rate because he has not had any accidents in the last 5 years at least.

So instead of pleasure under my name the insurance guy put drive to work under my husbands name.

I'm kinda of tired of the insurance guy already.

Is he right or is he just scamming me?

  1. Rates are, in part, based on mileage to and from work.

Fort example, the lowest bracket may be 0-5, then 5 to 10, 10 to 20, etc...

    You are not being scammed.

  2. He's right.  It costs less to insure a car when its primary purpose is to go to and from work than it does if its primary purpose is "pleasure."

  3. I'm in the same situation (new stay at home mom no longer driving to work) and my Allstate agent told me the same thing.  As a former customer service rep for an independent insurance agency, I saw many companies changing the old hard and fast rules that governed vehicle usage classes.  It used to be that companies had between 1 and 5 rating tiers based on your age and driving record alone, and in each tier pleasure use was always rated lower than driving to work.  Now companies have many more tiers, maybe 10-50 or more based on all kinds of crazy criteria (like whether or not you went to college, puh-leez!), and changes in usage don't necessarily merit lower rates anymore.  In fact, sometimes changing from work use to pleasure would actually increase someone's rate!  No insurance company could ever give me a decent reason for this, it was "just part of the rating software that can't be changed".  This is just one of the many reasons I'm so glad to be out of the insurance business!  FYI - I got an online quote from the insurance company with the cute little lizard (you know the one I'm talking about!) and it was way less than Allstate.  If you decide to shop around make sure you get quotes wth at least the same limits you have now.  The lizard initially gives you basic limits but you can increase them to match what you currently have if necessary.
