My baby, Coco, is a beagle. And from what I heard from other beagle owners they like to run away, like mine does. He is about 2 years old... Born January 18th, 2005 .. Is it too late to get him fixed? And what would happen to him.. Would he lose his personality because we got him fixed so late?

  1. No!  Neutering will NOT make him "lose" his personality.  That's a complete myth.  In order to decrease behavioral problems associated with male hormones, it would have been better to neuter him before 1 year old, but you can still do it now, and I highly suggest you do!

  2. It's definitely not too late to get him neutered.  And not, he won't lose his personality.  Neutering doesn't change a dog's basic personality in the slightest.  It's also not going to do anything to stop him from running away.  Neutering doesn't take the place of training.  But it will lessen his chances of getting cancer so it's always a good idea to get it done.

  3. No it's not too late to neuter... and you probably won't notice any change in his behavior, other than perhaps a decrease in aggression and less interest in female dogs, both of which are good changes!

  4. no he will be the same dog just healthier and yes they will still run away they are sent dogs made for hunting rabbits and smaller animals sorry but i have a beagle to just keep him on a leash at all times when going out..... and have fun with him exercise him more but never let him loose fixed or not ... but do have him fixed this is healthier for him and he will be the same just happier

  5. Its never too late to neuter.

No he will not loose his personality.  He will still be the same dog, just unable to reproduce.

Neutering wont guarantee that he will stay at home tho, he wont be so ansy about wanting to roam.. but its a beagle's nature to follow their nose!  but at least you know he isnt out contributing to the over population problem, fighting with rival males, or picking up brucellosis.

  6. I have a beagle too that is around the same age as yours.

Beagles have a tendency to run away because they have natural hunting instincts. My dog has tried to boot it out the door numerous times, even though he is fixed, but we stop him every time and keep him tied on while outside.

2 years old isn't too old to get him fixed. So,if you get him fixed,he'll still have that instinct to run to the woods, but he'll more or less have less interest in female beagles and will not be able to create puppies. So,he won't loose his personality.

I hope you get him fixed because there are enough homeless puppies and dogs out there.Good Luck!
