Question:

My Boat motor wont start after 5 months?

I haven't used my boat in a while or start it up because of my work hours. I tried to start it the other day but now it wont start up.

I had already ruled out the battery because the motor turns but wont turn over. What i have noticed is that when it is turning the negative battery terminal starts to smoke if i try for more than 10 seconds without stopping.

I changed the spark plugs because they were dirty and due for a change after sitting for so long.

Sometimes the motor sounds like it wants to turn over but it dont. Im not sure what else to do at this point.

Ive thought of a few things that might also need changing but im not sure if im correct.

Ive thought about changing the spark plug wires, the fuel filter, the starter, and even the battery terminal wires.

Can someone help me out please.....i really wanna get my boat running for spring and summer.

  1. Ok I dont understand what your trying to say on a few things. Like for one,,,you said "the motor turns but wont turn over" Are you saying that the motor itself turns over but just wont start? You also said "sometimes it sounds like the motor wants to turn over but it dont" This sounds like the motor is actually locked up yet trying to "break" loose. Please be more specific and I can probably help you.

  2. Chances are you didn't unplug the fuel line and run it until it died, running it out of fuel, Id say the carbs need cleaned, the old fuel is gone leaving only the gum in the carbs.

you may get Lucky and be able to remove the drains from the bottom of the carbs and use the pump ball to force gum out into the carbs, replace the plugs, re pump and let it set for a day then remove the plugs drain the carbs, you can tell if you had some success if the fuel is dirty looking, replace the plugs re pump and see if it start,s,

  3. drain the carb and fuel tank use a electric fuel pump like holley and ground it clean the terminals and where the ground meets the block keep a extinguisher close

  4. Forgot to add "STABIL" to the fuel before storing it didn't you??

Your gas went bad, it forms a sludge and then becomes almost a varnish. It plugs the carbs, or Fuel injectors, fuel lines even the fuel pump. In addition, moisture in the fuel will cause rust and other problems. You just learned an expensive lesson.(been there done that myself) Always use a fuel stabilizer before storing any gas powered motor for more than 2-3 weeks.  You are going to have to clean out the carbs, fuel lines etc. change the plugs, drain out ALL the remaining fuel, clean out the fuel tank too.  Most marina's offer a package deal to do all that for you (because so many people make that common mistake!!) Good luck.

  5. Your carb is clogged you need to clean it, with carb cleaner. If it is an expensive engine, you need to take it to a outboard mechanic, because the seals and small parts are fragile and expensive.

  6. First clean and tighten your battery terminals to prevent the smoking.

Your fuel is probably dirty, or has water in the system.  The filters and any carburetors should be cleaned.  Get some starting fluid and spray a bit into the air intake before cranking over.  If it starts on that and then dies, it points to bad fuel and/or delivery sytem problem.  No starting points to an electrical problem.

  7. 1st clean the battery terminals...charge the battery. 2nd with the plugs out, spin the engine over with the starter three or four times...no more than 10 seconds at a time . While doing this check and see if spark plugs are throwing a good blue spark.Replace the plugs. 3rd spray a small amount of gas/oil mixture into the carb . Your engine should start up for you What I feel has happened is your carb has dried out and needs a good priming..this proceedure usually works.

  8. sell it and buy new its the next guys problem
