Question:

My Brain Moves?

Once in awhile my brain gives these odd sensations. It feels like growth or enlargement sensation. They happen at arbitrary regions of my brain. It doesn't hurt, and it actually feels kind of good because it feels like a tickle -- partially. My fear though is if it is a tumor growing or something.

I just found out in neurology that the brain is one of the only parts of the body that can't feel. What is going on?

  1. Brain is like a semifluid thing so you may get that sensation.

  2. That is true, the brain can't feel since it is where the sensory neurons are located, not the sensory fibers. It is also not possible to feel the brain moving since it is suspended in CSF which protects the brain from bumping into the parts of the cranium when we move.

What you might be feeling are sensations coming from your scalp which you interpret as coming from your brain. Fluctuations in blood pressure to the brain also gives these kind of sensations.

  3. Most of the time your brain moves  with the same velocity as your skull.  That is, the brain does not significantly move around inside the skull.

However, there an exception.  If you were moving at high speed and came to an abrupt stop, your brain might move with respect to your skull, potentially resulting in brain damage.  This happens in when someone's head hits the dash board of the car during a collision.  The skull stops moving, but the brain inside the skull compresses into the skull in the direction of its velocity.  Frequently, the damage is found on the opposite side of the brain from the site of impact due to shock waves within the brain.  These are called contracoup injuries.l
