Question:

My Brother's Credit is Ruined

What should I tell him? I mean I gave up my job for him by recommending him to my boss to replace me because I he needs the job more than I do. I got my Associates and it wouldn't be as hard looking for a job, my brother doesn't have anything.

He doesn't pay his credit card anymore, his car got REPO at 4am today. What I've been telling him is to just get a cheaper car and instead of buying another one, buy one that you can pay off cash and then while his working save some money and no more credit cards.

What other suggestions should I give him? Thanks!

  1. It sounds like he is going to have to learn by himself, and to learn the hard way.  It sounds like he is using you.  You are trying to help him, but are actually delaying his recovery.  He need to learn to live within his means, and not to always have you to come to the rescue.

  2. Tell him not to spend more than he can afford to pay.

That's all it comes down to really. He definitely needs to buy a cheap used car that gets good gas mileage

I agree with the above people that say you're trying to do too much for him and he just needs to learn the lessons for himself. Giving him advice is fine, but giving him your job just because "he needs it more"? I dunno about that.

  3. there is nothing you can do,  Just be smart and don't co-sign anything for him, or you will be in the same shoes with him.

  4. Your brother is an adult and is acting like a child.  No doubt all of the advice from little bro is pissing him off.  He may very well be doing just the opposite of what you advise just because it's you who is saying it.

My advice is to leave your brother alone.  Yes, his credit is ruined and it's going to take time and effort to repair it.  His time and effort.  He's obviously not ready for this.

Have you considered your reputation?  You recommended your brother to your boss.  Why?  Sure your brother needed the job but did the job need your brother?  How does your boss feel about this recommendation now?

Get on with your life and let your brother be.  You can't live his live for him.  He has to make his own mistakes, come to terms with them and start to rectify the situation.  He's not close to being ready for this.
