My Brothers MFC-420CN doesn't print.

My Brothers MFC-420CN doesn't print. It says the black cartridge is empty but I have replaced it -(it still had nearly half a cartridge of ink in the one I took out). It still says the cartridge is empty and I am sure it is installed correctly.
