Question:

My Cat Keeps Peeing Outside Her Litter Box!!!

We have 3 cats and one outdoor cat that likes to come in during the day and go out and play during the night. Our oldest cat (who is neutered and been using the litter box since she was little) has recently started peeing by the door. We clean and disinfect it but she still pees there. I'm wondering if maybe the smell lingers there any keeps her coming back to do her business there. While she doesn't do it there all the time (she does pee and p**p in her litter box as well) it can smell and is becoming a pain to clean up.

Does anyone know of any spray that can be used to get rid of the scent or something else we can do to stop her from peeing by our front door?

  1. I use plain distilled vinegar to saturate the soiled area, leave it for a few minutes, and rinse with warm water. I find this method works well on all surfaces, including carpet and cement. Its non-toxic, cats cant stand the smell and it is all natural. Cats are creatures of habit so I'm sure if they can remotely smell the place where they urinated - they will continue to mark that spot.

  2. Medical problems come to mind, as that is often a reason for litter box avoidance.  On a sporadic basis, it could be a territorial issue.   He could be telling the outdoor cat to stay away from the litter box.  There are other issues with litter boxes, but normally those are involved in cleaning and changing, and you noted it is sporadic so I suspect a territorial issue.

As far as cleaning, the easiest, cheapest and fastest is with white vinegar, and I have posted a link.  If your cat senses any odor still present, he will re-mark the area over and over.  And the cat's sense of smell is far superior to ours.

I have to resort to a puppy training pad by one of my litter boxes to cope with a territorial marking problem.  Unfortunately, that doesn't work for areas with traffic.

  3. Sometimes cats don't like the smell of other cats.  Are you cleaning the litter box daily?  There could be an infection too.  There is a pet smart spray that my mom used but what really worked for some strange odd reason was alumium foil  place it where the cat goes after you use the cleaner.  My mom put that in the corners where the cats us to go and after a while they didn't go there..once they were use to it my mom picked up the foil and they haven't gone back since.

  4. THERE COULD  BE A NUMBER OF REASONS WHY:

-LITTER BOX IS OVER POPULATED OR DIRTY

-DEPENDING ON AGE... SHE CAN'T HOLD IT

-OR SHE CAN JUST BE MARKING HER TERRITORY

WITH SO MANY CATS ITS HARD TO NARROW DOWN THE REASON FROM MY END... BUT I CAN SUGGEST CLEANING THE AREA... ENTIRELY... WITH FRESH LEMON JUICE OR FULL STRENGTH VINGAR WHICH WILL NUETRALIZE THE SCENT AND AVOID HER FROM VISITING THE SAME SPOT.

    GOOD LUCK

  5. She needs to see a vet to check for any medical problems.  Many cats will have litter box problems when they are ill.

Litter box problems are very frustrating for all.....human and feline.  Here's a link that you might find helpful:
